COMBINED NOZZLE AND SPRINKLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,291, dated January 23, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM L. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Nozzle and Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hose nozzles and sprinklers, and my object is to provide a combination of parts having sucha construction that the device may by a very slight change be used either as a common nozzle for projecting water to a distance, or be used as a lawn sprinkler, the lawn sprinkler attachment being adjustable so that, a spray may be formed of any desired degree of fineness as will be fully described hereinafter, and is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combined nozzle and sprinkler, together with the top portion of the supply pipe. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the nozzle, shown in Fig. 1, with the sprinkler attachment in elevation and in position for duty. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the sprinkler attachment stem, together with friction springs at the top for the purpose hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the adjustable sprinkler baffle which is fitted to the screw threads shown at a portion of the upper end of the stem Fig. 3.

A is the nozzle which is fitted to attach to the end of a pipe B through which water is supplied. At the inside of the nozzle is a projection 0 whose end is at the center of the nozzle and is provided with a screw threaded hold into which is screwed the lower end of the sprinkler attachment stem D, which extendscentrallyand longitudinallyout through the mouth of the nozzle as shown in Fig. 2.

of the nozzle when in position for duty, and

the top of stem D. Springs H are for the purpose of holding by friction the baffle E in any desired position on stem D so that the pressure of the water will not move the baffie.

In operation, as a sprinkler the water in passing out at the annular orifice K, between the end of the nozzle and the baffle E, is in such a thin sheet that the frictional contact with the air causes it to break up into a very fine spray, which may be regulated to a coarser spray by screwing the baffle out from the end of the nozzle, as is obvious. By grasping the top button J with the fingers the stem Dmay be unscrewed from the projection G and removed from the nozzle, in which case the nozzle could be used for projecting water to a'distance, as is usually done with nozzles of this same general shape. When used as a sprinkler it is placed in a substantially vertical position which causes the spray to. assume the shape of anumbrella top the water being projected at a considerable horizontal distance from the annular orifice K.

I claim as my invention- In a combined nozzle and sprinkler, the combination with the stem D, secured and disposed as stated hereinbefore, of the button .I secured thereto, baffle G adj ustably mounted upon said stem and springs H attached at one end to said button and having their other ends in contact with baffle G for the purpose stated.
