Description

(No Model.)
' I. ARMER.
.WIND HARP FOR BIGYGLES.
No. 513,168. Patented Jan. 23, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISIDOR ARMER, OF BRESLAU, GERMANY.
WIND-HARP FOR BICYCLES.
sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,168, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed March 11, 1893. $erial No. 465,571- (No model.) Patented in England February 10, 1893,110. 3,004-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISIDOR ARMER, of Breslau, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Signal for Bicycles, &c., (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Great Britain, No. 3,004. of February 10, 1893,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing, which represents in perspective the construction of my improved signal and the manner of mounting it on the handle-bar of a velocipede.
The present invention relates to the adaptation of an audible signal, in the form of an flilolian harp, to velocipedes.
The iEolian harp is fixed in any suitable manner to the steering-bar a, as shown in the accompanying drawing, which represents a part of the steering-bar to which it is attached.
As shown in the drawing, the body of the Atoll-an harp is in the form of two air-collecting funnels b 5, connected together at their truncated ends with their coinciding axes presented in the line of movement of the velocipede. This form of body aids in collecting and conducting a large amount of air into the body of the harp and gives an ornamental shape thereto.
The strength of sound of the rEolian harp is in direct proportion to the strength of the air current produced by the speed of travel, and in its novel relation on a velocipede and especially for quick riding it serves not only as an eifective danger signal automatically graduated in loudness proportionally to the rate of speed, and consequently to the danger, but also proves a source of pleasure and amusement for the cyclist. The improved signal, is moreover, very convenient, for, 1nstead of the cyclist having as in connection with the signaling instruments generally in use, to sound the signal apparatus by mak ng a special movement of the hand, an l/Eolian harp attached to the velocipede will sound continuously, and without any action of the rider, and both hands are thus left available for manipulating the handles, which is an essential advantage in crowded traffic.
Iwouldhereremarkthatthet'orm of theharpbody may be varied at will without departing from the nature of my invention, so long as the general principle ismaintained of havlng the device so presented that it will be automatically operated by the current of air set up by the movement of the vehicle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Incombination with a velocipede, an audible signal consisting of a wind instrument suitably mounted on said velocipede and provided with an air collecting funnel presented in the proper direction, to receive the current of air set up by the movement of the velocipede and direct said current into the instrument to automatically sound it, as explained.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ISIDOR ARMER.
