only thespeed at which the rider would be I traveling if the apparatus were a bicycle, but also the mileage which he would cover.
Another obj ect is to provide a neat, attractive, and economical construction of exercising apparatus of the general character above referred to, and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
eferring to the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved exercising device. Figure 2 is an enlarged broken sect-ion taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direct-ion of the arrow; and Figure 3, an enlarged sectional view taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
he construction illustrated comprises a base member 4 adapted to be rigidly secured to a fioor or the like as by means of the fastening devices 5, this base member forming a support for the various parts of the apparatus.
Rigdly secured to and rising from the base plate 4 is a series of uprights 6, 7 and 8, each preferably of tubular form and connected together by tubular cross rods 9 and 10. Mounted in the upright 6 to be adjustable up and down therein is a seat post 11 carrying a seat 12 for the one using the apparatus; and mounted in the upright 8 is a handle bar post 13 to which a handle bar 14, such as is provided on bicycles, is secured. Mounted in the upright 7 is a post 15 terminating in a crank-hanger bearing 16 in which a pedalequipped crank-hanger 17 connected with a sprocket 18, is journalled. The arrangement of the seat 12, crank-hanger 17, and handle bar 14 is similar to that provided in the ordinary bicycle.
The apparatus also comprises a forked frame member 19 rigidly connected at its lower e to the similar provided in bicycle constructi ing a support for ported ends in Serial No. 246,816.
nd tot-he base 4 and at upright its other end 8, this fork member being to the rear fork member commonly on an axle 21 rigidly s the opposite side memb frame 19. The wheel 20'is pro sprocket 23 connected by a sprocket chain 24.
eans are associated with the producing, if de tion th prefera wheel to freely sistance to its ons and forma wheel 2O rotatably supecured at its ers 22 of the vided with a with the sprocket 18 wheel 2O for sired, resistance to the rotaereof, the means shown, which are bly adjustable either to permit the frame 25 pivotally connected frame 19, the frame 25 carryin for engagemen wheel 20, the d the roller-27 against the wheel lated by a screw device 28 lower end with the base 4 a ed connectionwith the yo The wheel 20 of th ion 30 operate bracket ported,
the wheel 2O gear 32 It is smaller cles ma e apparatus, drives which by preference is and speed indicator,- ample may be of any tion and is represented device, shown as having ke 25. in being' an ind which Aby rotate or present variable rerotation, comprising a yoke at 26 to the g a roller 27 t with the periphery of the egree of pressure exerted by being reguengaging at its Y nd having` threadrotated by the user icator device a combined mileage way of exwell known construcat 29, this indicating a terminal bevel pinthrough the medium of which it is d, being provided with an apertured arm 3l at which the d in the position being evice is supshown, on the axle 21, l provided with a bevel rotating therewith and meshing with the bevel pinion 30.
' preferred that the wheel 20 be of diameter than the wheels provided of the apparatus and substantial indicate the operat of the driving of an ordinary b may be ratio b accomplished either by etween the drive sproc the parts of the exerproportioned that inded for use y be used as a part of the with bicyequipment ly accurately ion thereof as in the case icycle.
making the ket and the driven sprocket or between t-he drive gear on the Wheel and the drive gear of the indica-tor, such as to produce this result.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular construction involving my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and -altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. An exercising apparatus comprising a base, a seat-supporting upright anda handlebar-supporting upright rising therefrom, .a relatively low upright on said base intermediate the first and second mentioned uprights, means connecting and bracing the relatively ,low upright to and from the first mentioned -uprights, a crank hanger journaled at the top of 'the third upright, a forked frame member forwardly of the second mentioned upright having one arm fastened to the second mentioned upright and the other .arm fastened to the base, a Wheel mounted by the forked frame member, and a driving connection between said crank hanger and said wheel.
Q. An exercising apparatus comprising a base, a seat-supporting upright and a handlebar-supporting upright rising therefrom7 an upright on said base intermediate said first and second mentioned uprights, a crank hanger journaled at the top of the third upright, a forked frame member forwardly of the second mentioned upright having one arm fastened to the second mentioned upright above the third mentioned upright and having the other arm fastened to the base, a Wheel mounted by the forked frame member, and a driving connection between said crank hanger and saidwheel located on the side of the wheel opposite the said forked member.
3. An exercising apparatus comprising a base7 a seat-supporting upright `and a handlebar-supporting upright rising therefrom, an upright on said base intermediate said first and second mentioned uprights, a crank hanger journaled at the top of the third upright, a forked frame member forwardly of the second mentioned upright having one arm fastened to the second mentioned upright above the third mentioned upright and having the other arm fastened to the base, a Wheel mounted by the forked frame member, a driving connection between said crank hanger and ysaid wheel, and means operable to apply pressure to the wheel to retard its motion, the latter means being fastened to one of the arms `of the frame member and located between such arm and the second mentioned upright.
