I Si mens; o 15 ram. -Patented Aug'. 9,1921.
n u uon'ffiieaJune a, 19.20. [serial in). 386,429.
To all whom it may conc'ernf 4 Be it known that we, JOHN H. MoCAn'rHY and HENRY Fl. .G'RAFF, citizens of the United States, resid ng at Lyons, 1n the county of lVayne'and State of New York, have invented new 7 and useful Improvements in Toy Carts, of which the following is a specification. I This invention relates to awheeled toy provided with propellingmeans andsteering means so that the child may propel himself along while seated upon the toy and the principal object of the inventionis toprovide means whereby the child may use both his feet and hands for propelling the device. Another object of the invention is to m vide means whereby the device can be steered by the hands whilethe propelling means are being actuated by the feet and hands.
This invention'also consists incertain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of theseveralparts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended I claims. r
In describing our invention 1n detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding partsthroughout the several views, and in which V Figure 1 is a side view of the invention;
' to the upper and lower facesof the fork.
The front wheel 3 is journaled in the forked end of the post 4, the upper end of which is reduced and is of cylindrical form to engage the openmgs in the rings and the space between the forks, said end be ng rotat-ably held in place by means of a cotter pin or the like. A shoulder isformed by saidreduced part and the lower part .of the post and this shoulderengages the lower .face of the lower ring.
, cured to the rear part of the seat and a crank shaft 6 is rotatably carrie d'by' said block and the rear wheels 7 aresuitablyise- A block 5 is sec'ured to the ends of said shaft The rocker lever 8 'is pivoted between the forks at the front end of the seat, the spaces formed by the forks being provided with an inner enlargement in which this lever operates.
The lower end of said lever is forked as at 9 to receive the bar 10 which isadjustably secured to said lever by means of the pinjll the crankwe may gear the same to the crank. l
ltwill thus be seen that by rocking the lever to and fro its motion will be communicated to the crank shaft by means of the bar 10 so that the rear wheels will be caused to revolve and thus propel the device along.
Vi e provide means whereby the rocker 12 secured to the, lower end of the rocker lever and a handle bar 13 which is'pivotally connected with the upper end of the rocker lever by means of the shaft 1a journaled in the forked upper end of said lever. Thus by placing both hands on the handle bar and the feet on the foot bar said lever can be rocked by both the arms and legs.
The steering means for the device comprises-a drum 15 carried by the shaft 1 1 and'to' which a looped cable 16. is connected. This cable passes between the forked en'd of the seat and between therings and passes around ,the cylindrical upper end of the post 4 and through the horizontal and vertical holes 17 formed in said cylindrical part, the ends of the cable being then secured to the upper end of the cylindrical .lever-inay be actuated by both the hands and feet, suchmeans comprising a foot bar part. It will thus beseen that by rotating the shaft and drum by the handle bar the post and front wheel can be moved'tosteer the device. e also support a foot rest bar 18011 the. post upon" which the feet are placed when it is desired to coast or to propel the device without using the feet. By means of this bar the device can be steered by means of the feet if desired. By
using both the arms and legs for propelling the devioeiit may be driven along at high 7 legs speed and the muscles of the arms and and of the back are exercised.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is v A device of the class described comprising a seat part having a forked front end a front wheel supporting? post 'rot'atabl mounted in said forked end, a rocker lever pivotally mounted betweenthe forks of said forked end, a block connected with the rear foot bar connected with the lowerend of I said lever, a shaft rotatably mounted in the upper end of said lever, a handle bar connected with said shaft, a drum on said shaft, a cable'connecting the drum with the front wheel supporting post, and a foot rest on said post. i
In testimony whereof we aflix our signa tures. Y l
