SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,164, dated January '23, 1894.

Application filed April 3, 1893. Serial No. 468,804. (No mOdeL other purposes to which it may be applicable without departing from the essence of my invention. The invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the improved index. Fig. 2 represents avertical section on the line 2-2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a top view. Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective View of one of the pivoted Fig. 5 represents a cross section on the line 5-5 shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 represents a detail perspective view of a modification of one of the pivoted leaves.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

A represents the base or back preferably made of wood and having secured to it a pair of brackets B, B, having perforations b, b, in which the back binder strips of the leaves G, C, are pivoted, and for this purpose the inner edge of each leaf 0 is attached to a shaped metal binder strip D having its upper and lower ends 0?, d, projecting beyond the upper and lower ends of the-leaf O to serve as pivots and adapted to be received in the perforations b, b, in the brackets B, B, as shown, by which arrangement, the binder strip itself is-made to serve as pivots on which I holding the leaf or leaves in any desired position as may be required by the operator when using the index.

For the purpose of preventing the upper edges of the leaves 0 from wearing out by contact with the yielding leaf retainer E, I provide the upper edge of each such leaf with a metal l shaped binder strip F as fully shown in the drawings. The leaves are preferably made of stiff card board or other stiff material, and have indexes on the edges of the body portions for the subject matter and advertising spaces at the upper and lower or other parts of the leaves as is common in-devices of this kind.

In Fig. '6 is shown a modification of the manner of attaching the pivots to the leaves, consisting in placing a metal wire G at the rear or inner edge of the leaf 0 and securing it to the latter by means of a cloth strip 9 wrapped about the metal wire G, and glued or cemented to the sides of the leaf as shown in said Fig. 6; the wire G being made somewhat longer than the leaf so that its projecting ends may serve as pivots on which the leaf may swing when journaled in the perforated brackets B. B.

The invention is very simple in construction being light and durable, and is particularly well adapted for use in connection with telephones or other devices where it' is desirable to find any particular address, number, or subject, 850., according to the use for which the invention is desired.

The invention when in use is to be hung on a'wall or otherwise secured thereto as may be most convenient.

Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and'operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1.
