W.` G. RAU. .ADJUSTABLE FLUE STOPPER.
No.l 513,141. Patente'd'Jam 23, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. RA'U, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO RAU BROTHERS,
OF SAME PLACE. i
DJUSTABLE FLUE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 513,141, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1893. $erial No. 477,774. (No model.)
To all whom it may ooncern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. -RAU, of Louisville, in the county of J efferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Flue-Stoppers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relatesto improved devices for closing chimney-flues when no stove-pipe is held in the same, and consists in certain details of construction and operation of parts all as hereinafter more fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In theannexed drawings similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all Views, wherein- Figure 1 is an edge View of the device with the curved arms drawn in to their limit of movement. Fig. 2 is a side view with the armsv in the same position. Fig. 3 is a partial plan view inverted in which the cover or shield cap is partially broken away, and Fig. 4 is a side view wherein the curved retaining arms are projected to their full limit of outward movement.
The face plate --A- is preferably circular in form, though any form which will answer to shield the stove-pipe opening will answer the purpose, andv the form of said face-plate is immaterial.
-B-- is a bifurcated base-piece held to the interior side of the face pieceby'means of the flat headed rivet --b-- under which it passes to retain it in close contact with the interior of the face plate --A-.v Rising from the base -B-=- is a riser --C- which has a longitudinal slot --C'- extending almost its entire length, while the swivel -fE- is secured to said riser by means of the screw or rivet -e-- passing through said slot -O'fi to secure said swivel hl-'- in position on said riser, and said slot is provided so as to permit vsaid swivel to move freely along the length of said riser for the purpose hereinafter explained.
At the exterior of the face-plate --A-- is a thumb nut -G-- which is connected to the threaded bolt -F-- so as to control said bolt in its revolution through the movement of said thumb-piece -G At the inner side of the face-plate is a swivel -E riding on said bolt fiF- and having an internal screw.- thread coinciding with the thread of said bolt,
and pivotally connected to the said swivel' -E- is a pair of curved arms -D--D-,- passing through guides --c'- in the turned up portion -O"- of said riser 0- formed integral with said riser -C-.
In operation my device works as follows: When it is desired to insert the device in position in a stove-pipe opening the arms -D- are projected into said opening and the facepiece -A-- is setup snugly against the face of the wall. turned in the proper direction to cause the swivel E- to travel along the line of the screw-threaded bolt --F-- until it has reached such position as will cause the outer ends of said arms --D- to impinge against the inner face of the flue-opening where it will be desirable to screw the said arms sufiiciently far to cause a positive lock of the parts to hold the face-piece --A- in position. The base B- being slotted as shown enables the parts to be readily assembled for use and permits of ready separation for the purpose of packing for shipment or storage if desired, for by merely unscrewing the bolt --F-- from its engagement the base-piece may be readily withdrawn from its position and the parts may be packed flat if desirable. Added economy of manufacture results from the form given the base piece --B-- as it and the riser--O- may be of a single piece of Sheet-metal bent into form as shown in the drawings thus permitting the manufacturer to secure the facepieces cut to proper Shape and secure thereto the riser ---C-- and its connections at will upon making a slight opening in the facepiece for the passage of said bolt --F-.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the described class, a pair of sliding expansion arms, a swivel-block to which said arms are pivotally connected and a projecting screw adapted to move said The thumb-piece -G- is then 65 swivel in a right line along its length, sub' inner ends of said arms are connected, all in stantially as speoified. combination substantially as specified. ro
2. In a device of the described character, a In testimonywhereof I have hereunto set face-p1ate,a thumb-piece on the external face my hand this 25th day of February, 1893.
