SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,607, dated January 9, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. DOUGHTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica, in the county of Queensand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of. myinvention is to produce a Writing pen the nib or point of which shall be in a line coincident with the longitudinal axis of the pen-holder, and the stem shall be formed in such a manneras to adapt the pento be used with any of the usual forms of penholders, and also to provide such a pen with an elastic shank between the point or nib and the stem that enters the holder in order to avoid lessening the flexibility of the pen when used with an ordinary holder.

The stem B of the pen is intended to be shaped to adapt it to be used with any of the usual forms of pen-holders. In the present instance it is represented as a half barrel stem in order to adapt it to be usedin a holder provided with a cylindrical or semi-cylindrical groove g as in Fig. 1. But as may be read: ily understood the stem may be a complete barrel as indicated by the dotted lines Fig. '2.

Between the stem and nib and connecting the two is a flat elastic shank s which is in exact horizontal alignment with the points b of the pen and the longitudinal axis of the holder as indicated by the dotted line w m Fig.

1. The stem whether of abarrelor halt barrel form is constructed so as to avoid destroying the alignment of the shank with the pen point, and this is accomplished by forminga shoulder between the flat shank s, and the stem at'or about right angles to the stem, whereby the stem is brought into alightment with the nib, and its full elasticity preserved.

The shank is provided with a transverse bend or shoulder 25, which may be next to the ,circular grooved holder, and provided with a downwardly turned shoulder, u and a shank s bet-ween the shoulder and the nib which is in longitudinal alignment with the point of the pen, substantially as specified.

2. In a pen and pen holder the combination of a holder provided with a circular or semi-circular groove, and a pen havingahalt barrel stem B shaped to fit the groove of the said holder and provided with a downwardly turned shoulder a penpoint or nib and a flat elastic shank between the shoulderuand nib, the said .shank and nib being in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the holder, substantially as specified.
