Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
J. T.` FOSTER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
`IMPROVEMENT IN PENS AND PEN-HOLDERS.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. FOSTER, of
Jersey City, New Jersey, have invent-ed a new and useful Improvement in Metal Pens and the Holders thereof; `andI do hereby describe and ascertain the same as follows, referring to the accompan yin g drawings, in Which Figure l is a perspective view with the pen ready for writing; Fig. 2, the same view with the pen being turned.
My improvement consists in the combination ot a double pen With the holder, and consists ofthe following parts: The pen a is made with the nibs formed in any of the most desirable ways, and with a nib at each end of the shank or barrel. At the center a', between the two extremes of this barrel, it is semiciiu cular, Aor of other convenient figure, and eX- tends around far enough to pass a pin through' it and the stem b of the pen-holder, on which the penswivels to bring either of the nibs into action at the will of the writer. VThe stem b slides in a case, c, so as to retract the pen within it when not in use, as in the case of other ever-pointed pens and pencils, and such i a pencil may be added to the other end of the sliding stem Z,so as to be thrust out of the opposite end of the case c, as clearly seen in the drawings. The slot `through the side of the oase by which the stem is moved, instead of being' straight, as in ordinary cases of like character, is made with offsets, as at e. The
purpose of this oset eis to allow the pen to be drawn back far enough to hold the nib within the case and prevent its swiveling while in use. The recess at f prevents the pen or pencil from sliding out while in the pocket.
It is obvious a single-pointed pen can be jointed in like manner to the holder when such pen is used.
Having thus fully described my improved double pen, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A single or double pointed pen connected with the holder by a swivel-joint, constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the offsets in the case, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
J. T. FOSTER.
