UNITED VSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL RUCHLE, OF HENNEF-ON'THESIEG, GERMANY.
FOUNTAIN-PEN.
To all whom 'it m07/ concern.'
Be it known that I, KARL RUOHLE, subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and resident at Hennef-on-the-Sieg, in the Province of the Rhine, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification, refernce being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to fountain pens, and more particularly to that class thereof in which the pen-point, if not in use, can be withdrawn into the holder or the body of the fountain pen. With the said class of fountain pens, it is usual to withdraw the pen po-int by means of rotating the end piece of the fountain pen, that is the end opposite to the pen point, means being provided for changing the rotary movement of the said end piece into an axial movement of the pen point. Such means consist, usually, in a part secured to the end piece of the fountain pen and bearing a helical groove, a rod bearing the pen point, a projection formed on the said rod, and a groove in the body of the fountain pen parallel to the axis of the same, the said projection of the pen point-rod being adapted to gear with the groove last mentioned as well as with the helical groove of the part secured to the end piece of the holder. Thus, by turning the piece in one direction the pen point will be withdrawn, while by turning the end piece in the other direction the pen point will be pushed out of the body of the fountain pen. For limiting the movement in both directions, a convenient stopping device must be provided, which, if placed into the interior of the body of the fountain pen by combining it with the described means for withdrawing and pushing the pen point, is liable to weaken and to complicate the construction. It is, therefore, advantageous to remove the said stopping device to the end piece of the fountain pen. According to the invention, the stopping device is formed by two circular grooves, the one of which is provided in the Specification of Letters Patent.

plain end face of the body of the fountain pen while the other is provided in the adjacent plain face of the rotatable end piece, and by a stop entering both grooves and adapted loosely to slide within the same. Each of the said circular grooves does not form a complete circle, but the sum of the lengths o-f both grooves forms more than a complete circle. Thus, the end piece can be turned more than one time around its axis. This degree of motion is absolutely necessary for obtaining the intended axial movement of the pen point.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the pen on an enlarged scale, the body and the end piece being partially shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plane end face of the pen body. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the adjacent plain face of the end piece from above, and Fig. t is a perspective view of the st-op.
a is the turnable end piece of the fountain pen, and c the body of the pen. The pen point, the barrel, and the well known means for changing the rotary movement of the end piece a into an axial movement of the pen point are not represented.
lz, is the part secured to the end piece a and having the helical groove not shown.
Z is the circular groove formed in the plain end face of the body c, Z9 is the corresponding groove provided in the adjacent face of the end piece a, and e is the stop loosely arranged in the groove Z as well as in the groove b. If the end piece a is turned, the stop e moves on a circular way equal to the sum of both grooves Z and Z). Thus the rotary motion of the end piece a will be limited in such a manner that the end piece can be turned around its axis more than one time.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- A fountain pen comprising a body, an end piece thereon, means to move the pen point out of, and back into the pen body by rotating said end piece, said pen body having a circular groove n its end, of less than an name to this speooaton in the presence of entlre clrcle, sald end plece havlng agroove two subscrlblng Wltnesses. colnoldlng Wlth the groove 1n the body and of less than one 11a-1f of an entire circle, and KARL hAUQHLIJ' 5 a stop piece sldable in said grooves when Ttnessesr said end piece is rotated, as herein set forth. LOUIS VANDoRY,
n testimony, whereof I have signed my GERLAUCH SCI-IFER.
