Description
ATTORNEYS COLLARD. PEN AND PENCIL CASE.
No. 192,899 .Patentec 1J'u1y'10,1877.
N, PEIERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, 0 cv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD M. COLLARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-AND-PENCIL CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,899, dated July 10, 1877; application filed June 18, 1877.
ment the features of the two instruments above referred to; and the nature of my invention consists in a pen-and-pencil case having both ends extensible, and both pen and pencil applied at one end, in combination with a double spirallygrooved tube for moving the pencil-stock, and an inclosing-tube therefor, when this tube is fixed rigidly to the outer short case, and a short distance beyond one end thereof, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an outside view of the improved instrument,
showing the pencil-nib and actuating-tube exposed beyond the ends of the outer case. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section through the guide-tube, outer case, and pen-sheath.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the outer case or barrel of the instrument, in one end of which a guide-tube, B, is rigidly secured, as shown at a, Fig. 2. This guide-tube is smaller in diameter than the outer case A, and extends a short distance beyond one end of it, receiving tightly uponit a short tube or cup, b. The space between the guide-tube B and the outer case A is adapted to receive the tubular sheath 0 of the pen 0, as shown in Fig. 2, which stiffens the exposed end of tube B and strengthens the nib D of the pencil-stock when exposed, as shown in the drawings.
In the exposed end of the guide-tube B is rigidly secured a short collar, e, in which the double spirally-slotted tube f is free to turn, but not to receive endwise motion. This slotted tube f receives within it the pencilstock g, bearing the nib D, and it is free to rotate and also receive end wise motion inside of a slotted actuating-tube, a, which slides in the guide-tube B. A pin, fixed to tube G, plays in one of the spiral slots in tube f, and a pin on the pencil-stock g playsin the other spirally-grooved slot in the tube f, and also in a straight slot, h, in the actuating-tube G.
The tube B serves as a holder for the pensheath 0 when the pen is adjusted inside of the case A, and also when it is adjusted for writing.
It will be seen, from the above description, that the pencil-nib is' projected beyond the end of tube B by drawing out tube 0. By simply pressing tube G into tube B the penoil-nib will, at the same time, be retracted, leaving the parts materially shortened, for convenience of carrying in the pocket.
The instrument, when extended, affords a very stiff and long handle for a. pen, and also a receptacle for the pen and its sheath when not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The guide-tube B, secured rigidly at one end, inside of the outer case A, and extended through the same, in combination with the double-slotted tube f, the pencil-stock g, and the slotted sliding actuating-tube G, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
