IMPROVEMENT IN PEN AND PENCIL CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,190, dated July 17, 1877; application filed l June 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES B. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pencil and Tooth-Pick Oase, of which the following is a speciicatiou This invention relates to cases designed either for pencils or tooth-picks; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel arrangement of tubes Within the stock or outside barrel, whereby the exposed part of the pencil-holder will be perfectly rigid, and
strongly supported by an interior mmovablyfixed tube, and this I do without slotting or perforating the exposed parts of the case, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an external view ofthe improved case adapted fora lead-pencil. Fig.2 is a diametrical sectionv through the same.

As before stated, the tube-A is stationary, and tube G slides on it in projecting or retracting the nib D.
It will thus be seen that great strength and rigidity is afforded to the pencilnib when it is projected, as shown iu the drawing. At the same time I havea solid penciloase-that is to say, its outer shells are not slotted nor perforated.
It is obvious that a tooth-pick may be xed to the pencil tube or stem D, and rendered rigid and strong by my improvement.
