SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,543, dated January 9, 1894.

To all whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, RICHARD FROBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county vof San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Mop-Heads; and I hereby declare the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a head which is designed to hold the cloths employedin making a mop for cleansing purposes.

It consists of a transverse jaw having a socket by which it is secured to the mop handle and provided with sharp pointed spurs projecting from its face, and a corresponding bar, having opposing spurs and hinged to a bracket at one end of the xed bar, and having the opposite end formed to fit into a socket in the corresponding end of the fixed bar with aspring actuated locking and unlocking device.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure.l is a view of the head with the parts closed and locked. Fig. 2 shows the head open. Figs. 3 and 4 are views showing the locking device. 1

A is a socket which is adapted to lit upon a handle, and B is a transverse bar fixed to vor formed with the outer end of the socket, and having sharp pointed spurs C projecting from its outer face. At one end of this bar is a standard D to which is hinged by a rule joint, the bar E having spurs F projecting from its inner face and intermediate between the spurs upon the fixed bar. The end opposite to the hinge extends inward at right angles with the bar, and has a portion formed to enter a correspondingly shaped socket in that end of the fixed bar. This entering portion is reduced in size to form a shoulder G to limit the distance to which it enters the socket, and has also a notch G formed in one side which is engaged by the latch lever H. This latch lever is fulcrumed in a slot formed in thevside of the fixed bar, near the outer end, and is practically tlush with the outer surface of the bar B and a spring I is fixed behind the end of the lever opposite the pawl or latchingportion by which that end is normally forced outward, and the latch is forced into the slot so as to engage with the notch in the end of the movable bar. When the movable bar is unlatched and turned backward, the mop materials are easily placed in position upon the fixed bar, and when the movable bar is closed down upon them, the spurs enter and clamp the fibrous material of which the mop is formed, the latch engaging the end of the movable bar and holding it firmly in place. By pressing upon the inner end of the latch, theouter end is disengaged from the notch in the end of the movable bar, and the latter may then be turned about its hinge so as to allow the bar to be opened and the cloths removed or adjusted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 'ters Patent, is-

An improved mop head consisting of two bars B and E hinged together, said bar B having a central socket piece for the handle and having one extremity provided with a standard to which the other bar is hinged, and having its opposite extremity slotted longitudinally and transversely so that the slots intersect, and said bar E having one end hinged to the standard of the opposing bar and having its opposite or free end reduced in size to enter the transverse slot or opening in the bar B and to form a shoulder at the base of the reduced end to limit the entrance of said end within its slot, a latching lever pivoted within the longitudinal slot in the bar B, lying approximately flush with its outer surface and having one end formed with a pawl adapted to engage a notch in the reduced end of the arm E, and a spring within said longitudinal slot and operating against the free end of the lever; said bars B and E also havinginwardly projecting spurs or points alternately disposed whereby the points of one bar enter spaces formed by adjacent points of the opposing bar, substantially as herein described.
