a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binder-si; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide a erence to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a temporary binder embodying` my improvements; Figs. 2 and 3 detail sectional views of one of the stubs in connection with a periodical, and Fig. 4, a detail perspective View of a portion of the stub.

Referring by letter to the drawings A represents the top and B the under cover of the binder, each of these covers being provided with a flexible joint b to permit of their being laid back in the ordinary manner. Upset in the rear portion of the cover B or otherwise rigidly connected thereto is an inte-` riorly screw-threaded tube C, two or more of the latter being employed in practice and arranged on the samel line at a suitable distance apart. Loose on each tube is a sleeve D, and engaging the interior of said tube is a screw-threaded pin E, the latter being passed through a perforation in the top cover A and provided with a suitable head.

The construction and arrangement of parts thus far described are substantially the same as that set forth in my prior Patent No. 464,731, issued December 8, 1891, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself matter of the posts formed by the tubes and telescopic sleeves, are possible without departure from the novel features hereinafter specified.

As one of the novel features of the present invention I make the rear portion of each cover from stiff material, preferably metal,

(No model l having an approximately right-angle contour, whereby I provide inwardly extending flanges c d one of which overlaps the other, leather or other [lexible material c being employed to unite the two sections of each cover and thereby form the joint above specified, as well as to conceal certain details of construction. By means of the rear portions of the cover I obtain a stiff back for the binder and prevent torsional play of the contents.

Another novel feature of the present invention is the peculiar stubs for connecting the binder and contents. Each stub comprises a spacing-strip F of card-board or other suitable stiff material and another strip G of exible material pasted or otherwise rigidly secured to the former. The iiexihle strip is of sufficient width to have a free portion fold over the stiff strip and both are punched out to form registering openings for the passage of the binder posts. Periodicals or other matter are united at the foldfof the flexible strip G by stitching or metallic clips g, the

latter being preferred inasmuch as they are neat, cheap and easily applied. The connection having been made, the free portion of the flexible strip is laid down on the noniieXible strip to which it is attached and the stub formed by these two strips slipped onto the posts in the binder.

By the employment of the stubs above specified it will be seen that the bound matter is not mutilated, and this is of especial advantage in connection with periodicals. It will also be observed that the employment of said stubs permits of periodicals being laid fiat open leaf by leaf, a result of materialimportance when two-page illustrations occur.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A temporary binder having the rear portion of each cover provided with a stiff in- ,tur-ned flange, substantially as set forth.

A temporary binder stub Comprising rigidly united flexible and nonf1exible strips, 5 the former of these strips being of such width as to have a free portion that folds on the other, the fold and united portions of the strips being provided with registering` openings at suitable intervals, substantially as set 1o forth.

5. A temporary binder comprising a pair of Covers having stiff intnrned and overlapping back flanges, suitable posts intermediate of the covers, and perforated stubs engaging the posts, eaoh stub having a folding: portion atx5 taehable to contents of said binder, substantially as set forth.
