SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 51 1,763, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filedAngust 26, 1893. Serial No. 484,126. (No model.)
2'70 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. DUNCKEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steelton, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Trolley, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in trolleys and ice-cleaning attachments.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of trolleys, and to provide one which, should the wire become displaced from the center groove or pulley, will return the same to the center groove or pulley automatically, and which will prevent any liability of its leaving the wire.
A further object of the invention is to enable the improvements to be readily applied to the ordinary construction of trolley without any material alteration of the same.
The invention also has for its object to provide an ice-cleaning attachment adapted to be readily applied to the trolley and removed therefrom, and capable of effectually crushing the ice on a wire and of removing the chrushed ice therefrom and of leaving the wire clean and free of ice for the trolley.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a trolley constructed in accordance with this invention, and provided with an ice cleaning attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the ice-cleaning attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the rocking or oscillating ice-crusher and cleaner.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the trolley, the ice-cleaning attachment being removed. Fig. 5 is atransverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the trolley.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a trolley socket provided at its top with ears 2, between which is journaled a pulley 3 and at the sides of which arejournaled outwardly tapering conical bodies 4.
The outwardly extending substantially conical bodies 4, are journaled at opposite sides of the pulley 3, and are provided with spiral grooves 5 inclined inward toward the trolley pulley 3, and adapted, should a wire leave the trolley pulley, to receive and conduct the same back to the trolley pulley, and thereby effectually prevent a trolley from leaving a wire. These grooved bodies or sections are capable of being readily applied to the ordinary construction of trolley, and do not in any manner interfere with the construction of the same or require an alteration thereof; and'they are provided at their outer ends or apexes with p i vgt ed disks 6 to form stops to catch the wire to prevent any liability of the trolley moving laterally too far, and becoming disengaged from the wire.
The ice-cleaning attachment consists of a frame 7 adapted to be detachably secured to the trolley socket, and a rocking ice-crusher and cleaner 8, which is journaled between outwardly extending arms 9 of the frame 7.
The rocking ice-crusher and cleaner is provided with front and rear transversely disposed rolls 10 and 1'], which are journaled between triangular end pieces 12, and the latter are connected by a transverse bar 13, which is interposed between the front and rear rolls. The front and rear rolls taper from their centers to their ends; the rear one 11 is constructed of gum, rubber or other elastic material, and is corrugated longitudinally; and the front roll 10 is constructed of suitablemetal, and is of twice the diameter of the rear roll. By constructing the rear elastic roll 11 of less diameter than the front roll it is caused to drag and partially rotate and operate as a brush to sweep the crushed ice from a Wire. This partial rotation and partial dragging of the elastic corrugated roll effectually removes the ice from the wire as fast as the ice is crushed by the front metallic roll.
In order to prevent the ice-cleaning attachment from being broken through contact with some obstruction, and to enable it to readily conform to the position of the trolley the frame is constructed of two sections let and 15, which are connected at the rear side of the frame by hinges l6, and are held normally in proper position as illustrated in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings by one or more spiral springs 17. The lower section is provided at its lower edge with an inclined curved groove 18, and has secured to it opposite the groove a detachable clamp 19,'\vhich is provided with a recess similar to the groove 18; and the curved groove 18 and the recess of the clamp form an inclined circular opening to receive the trolley socket.
The ice-cleanin g attachment may be readily removgd by means of a detachable clamp 19.
The ice-cleaning attachment is of the same width of the trolley, and is adapted to conform to the movements of the same, and it is in engagement with a wire whenever the trolley is in contact with the same.
It will be seen that the trolley and the attachment are simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that the trolley is effectually prevented from accidentally leaving a wire, and that the ice-cleaning attachment is capable of readily removing the ice from the wire. It will also be apparent that the improvements in trolleys may be readily applied to the ordinary construction of trolleys without altering the construction of the same, and that the ice-cleaning attachment may be readily applied to and removed from the trolley at pleasure.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim isl. The combination of a trolley socket, a pulley mounted therein, separate outwardly tapering bodies journaled at opposite sides to the pulley and provided with spiral grooves, and an ice-cleaning attachment comprising a frame and being of substantially the same width as the trolley and detachably secured to the socket, and a rocking ice-crusher and cleaner journaled on the frame and provided with rolls, substantially as described.
