Be it known that I, FRANK DRINKWATER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved hat pin. Fig. 2 illustrates the pin as applied for use to a ladys hat, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the method of applying the keeper disk to the pm.

The object of my invention is to provide a hat pin which may be pressed through the hat and inserted into the hair in the usual way for holding the hat upon the head and has applied to it inside of the hat a separate disk or keeper for retaining the pin in the body of the hat when the pin has been withdrawn from the hair and the hat removed from the head. The pin A is formed at or near its point with an enlargement a tapering at each end so that it will not materially obstruct the insertion of the pin into and its withdrawal from the hair. The outer end of the pin is provided with an ornamental or plain knob I) of any appropriate size. Upon the pin is placed a loose keeper or disk 0 of hard rubber, celluloid, ivory, metal, or other suitable material which is applied to the pin after its insertion through the body of the hat and which acts between the sweat or ad jacent surface of the hat and the knob 19 permitting the pin to be pressed through the disk into the hair and withdrawn to the knob, which latter holds the pin in the hat at all times. The said disk 0 is by preference made of celluloid of white, red, blue, or other color, and is formed with a slot 0' extending from the edge to the central aperture 0 and this slot is by preference turned to form a projection or lip c to retain the pin and prevent casual detachment of the disk from the pin. The disk is applied to the pin by spreading it at the slot and working it over the pin unv til the central orifice is reached which is of larger size than the pin to permit free in and out movement, the material of which the disk is formed being of sufficient elasticity to close the slot after the pin has dropped into the central orifice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hat pin, consisting of a small rod or wire of sufficient length to reach through the crown of a ladys hat or bonnet, and sharpened to a point at one end, and provided with a knob at the other, and formed with a tapering enlargement adjacent to the point, in

combination with a hat or bonnet and a loose disk applied to the body of the pin between the inner surface of the crown of the hat or bonnet and the said tapering enlargement,

substantially as and for the purposes described.
