JAMES PATRICK KANE, OF ROCHESTER, NEXV YORK.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,702, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed March 11, 1893- Serial No. 465,595. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom. it may concern.-
3eitknown that I, J AMES PATRICK KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Mon roeand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to theaccompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whioh form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in Window-sash-fasteners, and especially to that class in which provision is made for securing the sash in a locked position as well as producing an antirattler.
The invention consists further in the novel arrangement, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims forming a part of this specification.
My sash-lock and fastener is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional view through the fastener and the upper and lower sash of a window, the parting strip, and window stop. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the looking device set in its operative position in the parting stop of the casing, and Fig. 3, isadetail view of the band spring used as means for preventing rattling of the sash. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of a modification of the locking lever.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, represents the upper sash of a window in longitudinal section, and B the lower sash, also in longitudinal C represents the window stop, D the parting strip, and E the blind stop.
F is the outside casing of a window.
At any convenient location on the parting strip, preferably four or five inches above the top of the lower window sash, I mortise out locking position is turned back and is flush with the parting strip, and is provided with a niche h for throwing it into or out ofa looking position.
I, is a lug against which the lever bears when it is at right angles to the window sash thus allowing the lower sash only a limited upward movement.
K is, a band spring, which may be riveted to the end of a guide L, also set in the mortise G. M is a similar guide for the other end of said spring, and the locking lever is so adjusted that when its shouldered end bears against the band spring, the spring is expanded out into the path of the upper and lower sash, so that when it is desired to lock the sash the lever is turned and the upper sash is held against the tension of the spring in its path, and the lower sash is held against the side of the spring in its path until it comes in contact with the lever at an angle. This spring serves to prevent the rattling of thesashes when the same are raised orlowered.
My invention is intended principally for allowing of ventilation and at the same time securing the window from being raised, and preventing rattling from a heavy wind.
In order to compensate for changes due to protracted dry or wet weather, and to provide generally for the regulation of the tension of the spring K, Iprovide a simple means for changing length of the cam portion of the lever H. This I accomplish in the manner shown in detail in Fig. 4. of the drawings. The outer end H of the cam I make in the form of a separate piece, which may be thrown outward by means of a set-screw O, the inner end of which is wedge shaped, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sash fastener, the combination of a lever seated in the parting strip of a window,
one end of said lever pivoted to the casing, and having a cam portion, the other end adapted to swingin the path of the sash, and a band spring also seated in the parting strip of a window casing and adapted to be crowded by said lever against the sash of" a window for preventing rattling of the latter, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sash fastener, the combination of a lever seated in the parting strip of a window, one end of said lever pivoted to the casing, and having a cam portion, the other end adapted to swingin the path of the sash, and
