R. T. MULOAHY. GATE.
Patented Dec. 26, 1893.

WITNESSES.- 124x UNITED STATES PATENT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letter 5 Patent No. 511,635, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed September 16, 1893- Serial No. 485,657. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. MU LCAHY, of Rosenberg,in the county of Fort Bend and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in the class of farm gates, which are supported centrally on a pivot post and adapted to be swung in either direction by means of levers and pullcords.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved gate in a closed position; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the gate, the keeper posts and swing posts being shown in horizontal section, and the gate being illustrated in an open position.
A frame is erected at the opening to be closed by the gate, which frame consists of two uprights or posts 10 and 10, connected by a cross bar 11. In the central portion of this frame the swing post 12 of the gate A, is located, being pivotally connected with the upper cross bar 11, and likewise pivoted in a block or other support 13, located in the ground. At front and rear of the central portion of the gate opening, preferably in alignment with the swing post 12, standards 14 and 15 are located, one standard being in front of and the other back of the said swing post.
The gate is secured at its center in any approved manner upon one side surface of the swing post 12. The body of the gate may be of any approved construction, but above the top rail or top of the gate, at each side of the swing post 12, a latch 16, is located, and the latches are pivoted at theirinner ends in brackets 17 secured to the body of the gate, prefer= ably adjacent to the swing post. The latches 16 are guided in studs or standards 18 and 19, located at about the central portion of each section of the gate and at each end, the latches being adapted for engagement with keepers 20, located upon opposite sides of the keeper posts 10 and 10. A lever 21, is fulcrumed upon the upper portion of the swing post at one side thereof, and a second lever 22, is fulcrumed immediately back of the lever 21 upon the opposite side of the post. These levers are preferably bell crank or elbow levers, and are horizontally located.
The right hand member of the bell crank lever 21 is connected by a link 23 with one end of a lever 24, centrally fulcrumed, for example upon the standard 14 in front of the gate, while a second link 25, connects the right-hand member of the front bell cranklever 21 with. one end of a lever 26, fulcrumed centrally upon the opposing standard 15, the links 23 and 25, being connected with corresponding ends of the levers 24: and 26.
' The left-hand member of the outer or rear bell crank lever 22, is connected by a link 27 with the opposite end of the standard lever 24, and a link 28, also connects the left-hand member of the elbow lever 22 with the corresponding end of the standard lever 26. An elbow lever 29, is fulcrumed in the intermediate latch guide 18 on the left-hand section of the gate, while a like lever 29, is fulcrumed in the latch guide 18 on the right-hand section of the gate. The left-hand member of the front angled lever 21, is connected by a link 31, with one member of the left-hand angled lever 29, the other member of the latter being connected by a link 31 with the left-hand latch, while the right-hand elbow latch lever 29 has one member connected by a link 30, with the right-hand member of the rear gate lever 22, the right-hand latch lever being connected with the right-hand latch by a link 30. The standard levers 21 and 26, are provided with handles 32 at their ends, capable of hanging down within easy reach of a pedestrian, and by means of these handles the standard levers are manipulated.
In the operation of the gate, by turning the inner standard lever 24 to the diagonal position shown in Fig. 2 the gate will be swung open, as is likewise shown in the same figure, the latches being at the same time lifted by the combined action of the gate levers and latch levers; and both the inner and the outer standard levers will be in a diagonal position, as both levers work together. After a person,
or a team, has passed through the opening disclosed bythe gate, upon restoringthe lefthand lever to its normal position at right angles to its standard, the gate will be closed, and the latches will automatically engage with their keepers 20. Since two latches are employed, one at each end of the gate, and they engage with keepers at opposite sides of the keeper posts, the gate can not be opened unless the latches are first disengaged from the keepers, or when the standard levers are manipulated.
It is evident that the above-described devices for opening-a gate may be applied to a single as well as to a double gate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a gate, the combination with a swing post to which the gate is secured at its center, standards 14 and i5 fixed in the roadway at opposite sides of the gate, and horizontal levers 24, 26 fulcrumed upon said standards,
nection with each latch link connections between the right and left hand members of the gate levers on the swing post and the right hand ends of both of the aforesaid standard levers, and links connecting the latch levers and the lower members of the gate levers,-
whereby the gate may be unlatched and swung open from either side, or closed from 35 either side, all as shown and described.
RICHARD fl. MULOAHY.
