LAMP-SUPPORT FOR MINERS HATS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,365, dated December 26, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN A. SIMPSON, of East Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Supports for Miners Hats, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to lamp supports for miners hats, and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claim hereinafter contained and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.

Figure 1 of the drawings isa side elevation of my improved lamp support as it appears attached to a hat, and the lamp supported thereon, said hat being represented in outline by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved lamp support. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same the cutting plane being on line w 00 on Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a base plate made partly of metal and partly of leather. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line y, g, on Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is 'a perspective view of the bracket for supporting the lamp, and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through a portion of the bracket on line 2;, v, on Fig. 3.

In the drawings A is the base plate of the lamp support which may be made entirely of sheet metal as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or of metal and leather as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

The base plate A has formed therein or secured thereto two parallel sockets a a to receive the two parallel shanks b b of the bracket B as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5. When the base plate is made of a-single piece of metal the soekets'to receive the bracket are formed by cutting six short horizontal slits through said metal in two rows of three stamping or swagiug the metal between, above and below said slip so as to throw portions of said metal outward or beyond the front surface of said plate and other portions toward the rear as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

made entirely of metal, in which caseI make the base plate of leather and secure thereto a metal socket plate A formed by doubling a strip of thin sheet metal upon itself with a loop or socket at each fold as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

The bracket B is composed of the bar or rod 0 having formed therein the annular groove 0', and the shanks b, b, formed from a single piece of wire which is passed through said rod 0 and bent to the shape indicated in Figs. 3 and 6, with two side horizontal portions 1), b, fitting into the radial end grooves 01, 01, formed in the rod or bar 0 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.

The base plate A is secured to the hat in its appropriate position by sewing through the holes e, e, at its corners or by riveting as may bepreferred, and when the bracket B is detached therefrom the hats may be packed one within another in packages of a dozen or any other desired number for transportation, while a like number of the brackets B may be conveniently packed within the crown of the outer hat of the package. This is a great advantage to the manufacturer, especially when applied to stitf or water proof hats.

The lamp C is of ordinaryconstruction and is provided with the hook h by which it is suspended from the bracket B in the ordinary way.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The combination with a miners hat, of the base plate A provided with two sockets a a formed by cutting slits in said plate swaging contiguous portions of said plate in opposite directions; and the detachable bracket B provided with the parallel shanks b b and the bar or rod 0 having the annular groove 0' to receive the lamp hook substantially as described.
