SPECAIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,079, dated December 1 9, 1893. Application filed October 6, 1893. Serial No. 487,322. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HOOKER, ofJersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Ejectors, of whichthe following is a specification..
My invention relates to an improvement in cjectors 1n which the nozzle for ej ecting the actuating duid into the barrel of the ejector ro 1s made capable of being adjusted into and i 5 barrel.-
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the ejector in longitudizo nal section and Fig. 2 'representsatransverse section through line :n of Fig. 1.
The barrel of the ejector is denoted by A and is provided at its inlet end with an enlarged chamber a, as is usual, andat its opposite end with an expanded mouth a. The
fluid to be ejected enters the chamber a through a suitable opening a2.
The nozzle for the admission of the actuating iiuid is denoted by B. It enters the 3Q chamber o, of the barrel A through an openf ing a3 in a direction substantially at right angles to the opening a2 through which the liuid to be ejected enters, and projects when in operation more or less completely across the chamber c', with its outlet end approaching the contracted portion of the barrel A. The tit of the nozzle B Within the opening as is intended to be as snug as is consistent with the longitudinally sliding movement of the 4o nozzle B. Surrounding the opening as there :is a tubular boss of* projecting outwardly from the wall of the chamber c and having an interior bore larger than the opening as. The interior of the tubular boss a4 is screw l threaded and a sleeve or bushing C, exteriorly screw threaded, is adapted to register with and screw into the boss a4. The sleeve or bushing C is provided with an interior bore adapted to snugly fit the exterior of the nozzle B but, at the same time, permit the said nozzle B to slide longitudinally therein.
'lphe nozzle B isprovided along a portion of'its exterior outsideof the sleeve or bushing C, with a screw thread b. A skeleton adjusting nut D is tted at one end d with an interior screw thread, adapted to engage the screw thread b on the nozzle and `at its opposite end is provided with an annular inwardly extending ring d constructed to loosely embrace the exterior of the sleeve or bushing C in proximity to the outer end of the tubular boss c". The nut D is locked in operative position by means of a nut E constructed to engage the reduced, screw threaded, outer end c of the sleeve or bushing C. The construction is such that when the nut E is screwed onto the end of the sleeve or bushing C, the inner side ot the nut will loosely engage the outer side of the inwardly projecting ring d on the skeleton nut D so as to permit the latter to rotate freely between the said nut E and the outer end of thetubular boss a4. The nozzle B is further 'conveniently provided with au annular projection b a short distance from its outer end, its exterior from its projection h to its extreme end being screw threaded for the purpose of conveniently attaching' thereto a supply P1136 The operatlon of the device 1s as follows:- Whenever it is desired to vary thel effective force of the actuating fluid under a given pressure, the nozzle B may be advanced toward or withdrawn from the contracted portion of the barrel A by simply turning the skeleton nutD in the one direction or the other, its engagement with the screw thread b upon the nozzle serving to move the latter longitudinally without disturbing its connection, either with the supply pipe or with the barrel of the ejector. A
By the above described arrangement, I am enabled to utilize the actuating iiuid to the greatest possible advantage by varying the position of the nozzle to correspond with the engaged with the nozzle and surrounding a xo varying loads or depths fromfwhioh the fluid portion of said bushing or sleevevand means t0 be ejected is to be drawn. foi locking the said adjusting nut in 'its posi What I claim istion ou the said bushing or sleeve, substan- 5 The combination with the ejector barrel tially as set forth.
and a nozzle having a. longitudinally sliding -WILLIAM H. HOOKER. movement into and ont of the barrel, of a, sleeve or bushing engaged with the barrel and surrounding the nozzle, an adjusting nut Witnesses:
FREDK. HAYNES, IRENE B. DECKER.
