Description

(No Model.)
W. C. WOOD. STREET RAILWAY'TRAGK.
Patented Dems, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATE-NT OEEICE. y
XVILLIAM CLARK VOOD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO LEWIS@ FOVLER `GrlltDER RAIL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET- RAl `LWAY TRAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,068, dated December 19, 1893.
l Application iiled April 6.1893. Serial,No.469,273. (lilo model.)
a resident of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented a newand useful Iniprovement in Street-Railway Tracks, of which theffollowing is a specication.
` t This invention relates to a girder-rail track in which box-rails and clamp-chairs are employed in the curves and straight track, either orboth, and consists i'n a novel switch-casting, adapted to be supported by clan1p-chairs constructed on the saine principle as those of the rails, and further adapted to be coupled cndwise to adjoining box-rails in a peculiar and advantageous manner, and in certain novel combinations of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The objects of the invention are to adapt the switches to be made of cast-steel or of cast-iron, without unnecessary Weight, and Without any departure from the box-rail systern of chairs and clamps; to adapt the tongue of a tongue-switch of this construction to be strongly pivoted to the switch casting by means of a simple keyed pin, and to adapt such switch-castings to be readily and tightly coupled endwise to adjoining box-rails, or to one or more of such rails, byclarnping devices similar in part to those of said clampchairs, and so that the rail-ends shall be solidly supported beneath by the switch-castv ing itself, so as to form smooth joints between tal section on the line 6-6 Fig. 5.
the switches and theadjoining rails.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specication as part thereof.
Figure l of the drawings is a small-scale plan view of a portion of a street-railway track, comprising a tongue-switch,which illustrates the present invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the switch -casting, projected from Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a vertical cross-section at SMS Fig. 1, this and the sncceeding iigures being enlarged from Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. flis a horizontal section on the line 4 4: Fig. 3. Fig. 5 `is a vertical section on 'the line 5-5 Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a` horizon- Fig. 7 is an elevation of the track at the entering end of .the switch. Fig. 8 is a cross-section on the line 8-8 Fig. 7, the switch-chair shown in Fig. 7 being omitted; and Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the sole-piece shown in Fig. 8, and hereinafter more particularly described.
Like letters and numbers refer to like parts in all the ligures.
The improved track shown in the drawings comprises box-rails A B and O of the construction set forth in my specification form ing part of United States Patent No. 443,470,
vdated December 23, 1890, said rails A and B beingof the shape known as Section B and shown in Figs. 1 to 5 of mydrawings forming part of Patent No. 450,594, dated April 14, 1891, While said rail C is of the shape known as Section C and represented by Fig. 1 of the drawings of said Patent No. 443,470. Connecting these rails there isatongue-switch mainly composed of a casting D, (Fig. 2,) which is approximately H-shaped in general crosssection, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and having a laterally swinging tongue E, Which is pivoted by means of a pin ll, headed at its upper end, and provided at its lower end with a key 12, and the tongue is further provided on top at its pivot end with a customary pro-V the treads 18 of the switchcasting and rails.
The rails and switch in common are supported by clamp-chairs F F2 F3 F4 F5, those beneath the switch-casting being each composed of a special chair-casting 19 litted to the switch at a given point, a pair of clamps 20, and a through bolt 21 of proper length; the chair-castings 19 being in common of the construction represented in Figs. 3 to 6, while the clamps 20 are uniform, and the bolts 21 differ only in length. To coact with the clamps 2O of such clamp-chairs, the switch 'casting D is further constructed with longitudinal flanges 22 which project laterally at bottom, andare beveled on top, and is bifurcated at its broad end, and here provided IOO with flanges 22 within the fork as well as externally, so that each extremity yis solidly supported by a special chair, F, F5, in addition to a sufticient number of intermediate chairs F2 Fs F4. Each chair, in the drawings, is fastened down to a wooden cross-tie G by spikes H, Figs. 3 to 7, of the construction set forth in my specification forming part of Patent No. 447,268, dated February 24, 1891, as shown distinctively in Figs. 3 and 5 and in Fig. 7. The spikes are omitted in Fig. 1. Each extremity of the switchcasting D is further constructed with an end-projection 23 tted to the interior of the adjoining rail-end, and forming a solid seat for such rail-end. A sole-piece 24 (Fig. 9) abuis against each endprojection at the bottom of the latter, and is constructed with laterally projecting ends beveled at bottom so as to coact with a pair of clamps 2OX and a through bolt 21X, similar to the clamps 2O and bolts 21 of the chairs, in the manner represented in Figs. 7 and 8. A smooth and adequately supported joint is thus readily formed between the switch and each adjoining rail.
Different patterns of box` rails, clamps, chairs and spikes may obviously be employed Without any material departure from this invention, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilledju the art.
Having thus described the said improvenient, l claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. In street-railway track comprising boxrails and clamp-chairs, a tongueswitch comfork as Well as externally, in combination with clamp-chairs at the several extremities ot` the casting, and with intermediate clampchairs, substantiallyas hereinbefore specified.
3. In street-railway track comprising boxrails, a switch-casting having a bifurcated broad end, and provided at each extremity with an end-projection iitted to the interior of an adjoining'box-rail, su bstantially as hereinbefore speciied.
4. In combination with a switch-castinghaving a suitable end-projection, and an adjoining iianged box-rail to the interior of which said projection is fitted, a sole-piece abutting against the bottom of said projection and having beveled lateral ends, a pair of clamps engaging saidl lateral ends and the rail-flanges, and a horizontal bolt connecting said clamps, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
