UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL O. GOLDSMITH, OF (JINGINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE IVEIR FROG COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET RAILWAY SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 398,248, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed May 24, 1888. iS'erial No. 274,921. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL 0. GOLD- SMITH, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented cerrain new and useful Improvements in Street- Railway Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and durable switch for girder-rails.
IO The various features of my invention will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view oi. my improve ment. Fig. 2 is a section on line :1: .r, Fig. 1].. Fig. 3 is a section on line 9 y, Fig. 1. liigJlis a section on line .2, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line .9 s, Fig. 1. Fig. 0 is a modification showing a rivetrtongue.
2 I have shown my invention here as adapted to be used either with a stationary or movable tongue-switch.
A represents a girder-rail, wc'ferably a center girder-rail, having the two train-flanges o 6; but the flange a may be omitted, if desired. This girder-rail A is beveled at its flange-head and web to form a switch-point of the desired angle.
The switch-rail is shown as constructed of two T-irons, 1:3 0, the T-iron C resting upon the same base as the girder-rail A and forming a bearing for the web l) of the T-iron B, which is placed at right angles to the T-iron O, the web of the T-iron B resting upon web 3 5 of the T-irou. C. In order to hold these two T-irons in position, I have provided angleirons 1, fitting the webs l) c of the .iron I; and secured by rivets 2 3. These are beveled to fit the girder-rails.
4 4 represents a built up head, which is shown secured to the web I) by rivets 5 5, Fig. 1.
6 represents a tongue, which is pivoted to the T-rails by means of center bolt, 7, passing down through the flange and secured by nut or key S.
9 represents a filling-block between the T- iron 0 and the girder-rail A, through which passes the center bolt, '7, and the transverse horizontal bolts 10, firmly securing the parts together.
11 represents similar filling-blocks placed forward of the tongue 6, for securing the front portion of said switch-points.
12 represents filling-blocks on the opposite side of the T-iron C. These blocks are preferably made of cast-iron of the shape to fit the flanges of the said T-irons at one side and the T-iron and girder-rail on the other side, and the said parts are secured together by means of through-bolts 13.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification which represents the tongue orbuilt-up head at proj ecti n g forward and forming a ri gi d tongue, which. is preferably used on the switch-mate. It will be obvious that the T-iron B performs two offices. The web A is sutficiently long to form space between the flange s and the head of the rail 'to allow the tongue 0 to move. It also performs the office of a guard-rail. for the flanges oi the wheel.
Having d es'oribcd my invention, what claim is 1.. A side guard-rail for a switch, composed of: the irons I) U, bolted together and to the girder-rail A, substantially as herein set forth.
2. I11 combination with the girder-rail A an d switch-rail formed of the T-irons B G, the filling-blocks 11 12, and the through-bolts 13, for securing the said parts together, substantially as herein specified.
'3. The combination, with the girder-rail A, of the switch-rail. B (1, built-up head a, and the angle-arm 1, for joining the said parts together, substantially as specified.
I. In a switch-point, the guide-rail composed of the T-irons B and 0, having their webs placed at right angles to each other, and the flange forming the guard-rail, and the flange l), forming the base for the built-up rail at, substantially as herein specified.
5. In a switch, the guardrail composed of the T-irons B and G, secured together by means of the angle-iron 1, bolted to Webs, fill- 9 5 ing-block 12, and the flange s, forming a guard for the tongue-rail 6, substantially as herein. specified.
6. switch-rail composed, substantially, of In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the T-irons B and O, placed at right angles my hand. to each other, the web of the iron B resting- TLV\ T' 1 rw upon the Web of the T-iron C, and secured L n TEL GOLDbMI 5 together by angle-plates 1 and rivets and bolts Witnesses:
and united to said girder-rails byfilling-blocks ROBERT ZAHNER,
and bolts, substantially as herein specified. J. \VATsON SIMS.
