RAILWAY-TRACK STRUCTURE.

To all whom, t 11mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KnAUss, of Johnstown, iu the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Track Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in railway-track structures, and more specifically to the structures of that type known as tongueswitches. I-Ieretoforein the manufacture of tongue-switches for use in connection with T-rail-track Work it has been customary to make the foundation structure of the switch of cast metal, either iron or steel, cast from apattern. To properly connect said structure to the adjacent track-rails, requires the use of combination-joints or specially-constructed splice-bars for the reason that the rail members of the casting do not conform accurately in section to the section of the adjacent rails, this being due to the inequalities or warping of the casting or to the fact that it is not practical to make the casting of the same depth of section as the adjacent rails. The making of these combinationjoints and special splice-bars to accurately fit the parts to be joined requires considerable l backsmithing and handwork, which is slow and expensive.
The object of my inventibn is to provide a construction ot tongue-switch adapted for use in T-rail trackage which can be readily made so as to be capable of connection in the track by means of ordinary iish plates or splice-bars; also, to provide a construction in which the parts can be readily constructed and assembled and which Will be rigid and durable.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a plan view of a tongue-switch embodying my invention; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are transverse sections taken, respectively,
In the figures, A A designate the main rail members of the structure; B, the' branch track-rail; C, a guard-rail, and D the pivoted tongue.
E is a body of cast metal which unites and secures the rail members A, B, and C, and F is a cast filler fitted between the rail members C and D and forming a bed orsupport for the switch-tongue D.
The structure is mounted and assembled in the following manner: The rail members A, B, and C, which are lengths of ordinary T-rail, are placed in a suitable mold and the metal body E is cast about them, being cored to form a pocket in which is seated a plate G of harder material, which forms the seat for the point of the tongue, for the purpose 0f providing this part of the structure With increased Wearing qualities. The filler E is cast from a suitable pattern, the T-rail A' being placed in the mold and having its end cast in the said body, as shown. The mold is also provided with cores which form a series of transverse bolt-seating apertures in the piece. It is also provided with a core adapted to seat a piece of guard plate I. This cast filler-piece is inserted between-the rail members B and C and is secured thereto by a series of bolts K, which pass through the said apertures. The guard-sectionI may be readily cast in place, if desired; but it is preferably seated in the core after the parts are assembled, for the reason that a piece of any desired length can then be used.
L is a short piece of guard-section which is cast in the body E.
The rail members A A' and B can be of the same section as the rails ofthe adjacent tracks, to which they can be secured by meansof the ordinary joints. Thefconstruction as a Whole results in a verysolid and durable structure.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A tongue-switch structure, consisting of two separate cast-metal bodies in which rail members of the structure are held, one of said bodies being secured to and between rail members of the other body.

2. In a tongue-switch structure composed of two parts, one of which consists ofacastmetal body forming a seat for the heel portion of the switch-tongue, and of a main rail member to which the said body is cast, and
the other part consisting of a cast-metal body having a seat for the point end of the switchtongue, and of main, branch and guardrail members to which said body is cast, together with bolts which secure said parts together.

The herein described tongue switch structure, comprising main and branch rail members consisting of T-raii corresponding in section to that of the adjacent rails, a guard-rail member, a cast-metal body Cast about lthe adjacent ends of said rail member, a cast filler secured between said branch and y,f nard-rail members and forming' a bed for the switch-tongue, and a main rail member secured vto said ller.

A tongue-switch structure having one of its main rail members, its branchorail member, and a guard-rail member united by a body of metal cast about the end portions thereof, a second cast-metal body fitting between and secured to the branch rail member and the guardrail member and forming a support for the switch-tongue, and :t second main rail member having its end portion cast into the last-named body.
