RAILROAD-SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Application filed August 26, 1911. Serial No. 646,193.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOSIAH W. Boom, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenwood, in the county of Greenwood and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railroad-switches and has for its object the provision of means for replacing the wheels of a derailed car on the tracks without necessitating stopping the train.
My invention consists of the emplacement of blocks between the rails adjacent to the switch points and having their ends beveled to carry the wheels up to the level of the rails, and having their top surfaces formed inclined toward the outer rails to carry the wheels back on the track.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of a railroad, showing my improvement in position; Fig. 2, a plan view of one of the blocks detached; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the block.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts in the several views.
A indicates the main line rails of a railroad, B the siding, and C the switch points pivotally secured at D and operated by a switch-stand, shown conveniently at E.
My improvement consists in placing the blocks 1 between the outermost pairs of rails A and B, said blocks having their ends formed inclined longitudinally, as shown at 2, and with one part of the top inclined, as shown at 3, and its middle portion formed .on a horizontal plane, as shown at 4.
In placing my blocks 1 in position, I secure them, as shown, between the outermost pairs of rails A and B by means of bolts 5,
with the portion 4 abutting the innermost rail of the pair and the inclined port-ion 3 toward the outermost rails of each pair.
l/Vhen in the position shown and described, should any of the wheels of the car leave the track in crossing the switch it will be apparent that as soon as they reach the blocks 1 the flanges of the wheels will ride up the inclined ends 2, and when the tops of the blocks are reached the inclined portion 3 on the block toward the outer rail on which the train is proceeding will force the wheels toward the proper track and cause the wheel or wheels on the outside of the track to ride over the horizontal portion of the block and the head of the inner rail and the wheels will be re laced automatically.
Having thus descri ed my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a main line track and a siding, blocks secured therebetween, each of said blocks having its ends inclined, and its top surface having a laterally-in clined portion on one side and its middle portion horizontal, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with a main line track, and a siding, blocks secured between the pairs of rails constituting the main line and siding tracks, said blocks having their ends inclined longitudinally, the portions of the blocks toward the outermost rails inclined laterally, and the middle portions of the blocks abutting the inner rails formed on horizontal planes, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSIAH W. BODIE.
