MATTRESS-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,541, dated December 12, 1893. Application filed `Sejptenlber 20, 1893. Serial No. 485,964. (No model.)
` ication, like letters and igures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a metallic mattress frame especially designed for woven wire or kindred mattresses, and consists in many details of construction to be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1, shows in plan view a mattress frame embodying this invention, supporting a woven wire mattress; Fig. 2, an enlarged sectional detail of one of the corners taken on the dotted line x, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional detail of another corner taken on the dotted line y, Fig. 1 Fig. 4, a cross section of one ot' the end rails with the mattress removed; Fig. 5, a similar cross section of one 0f the end rails with the mattress engaged and held by it; Fig. 6, a perspective view of one of the corner blocks which are placed between the side and' end rails.
The side rails a., b, are made alike consisting of cylindrical tubular metallic rods or bars, and the end rails c, d, are also made alike consisting of cylindrical tubular metallic rods or bars, slitted as at c', see Fig. 4, from end to end. The side rails and end rails are arranged at right angles with relation to each other to form a quadrangular frame, and t0 prevent said rails twisting or turning one with relation to another when secured together, blocks e, see Fig. 6, are interposed between the side and end rails at the corners where said rails cross one another, said blocks having each two grooves formed in it, one upon its upper and the other upon its under side, and arranged at right angles with relation to each other, and shaped to kreceive the side and end rails. At one corner of the mattress frame, a bolt c2, passes down through holes made in the end rail c, also through a hole made in the interposed block e, and through slots a made in the side rail a, said bolt being supplied with a nut c3. This bolt c2, secures one end of the end rail c to one end of b, adjacent the end rail c, are closed by caps c4 having externally projecting squared ends c5 adapted to receive a wrench, and having -screw threaded holes through them which receive the Shanks of the eye-bolts c6, the eyes of which embrace or are connected with the shanks of the bolts c2. Said closing caps therefore serve as nuts and by turning them in one or the other direction, the bolts czwill be correspondingly moved in the slots in the side rails, thereby adjusting the end rail c with relation to the end rail d. Thin metallic plates f are or may be placed upon each side of the side rails to cover the slots a therein. At the opposite end ofthe mattress frame the end rail d is embraced at points near the ends by straps d', the ends of which pass down through the side rails a, b, see Fig. 3, and are supplied with nuts cl2, thereby firmly securing the said end rail with the block e interposed between it and the side rails. The strap d', it will be seen, may be loosened and thereby permit the end rail d to be turned by means of a Spanner or wrench, to tighten the mattress if desired, after which said strap may be tightened, or in lieu of adjusting the mattress at this end of the frame in this manner, it may be adjusted similarly to the opposite end of the frame.
When a Spanner is used for turning the end rail d it may be made to engage the head of a short bolt 2, as represented by dotted lines Fig. 5.
In securing the mattress tothe end rails c, d, the ends of the mattress are inserted in the slots c', and short bolts 2, pass through said 4end rails supplied with nuts 3, so that by turning said nuts the end rails are contracted thereby firmly clamping and holding the ends of the mattress. The short bolts 2 may and preferably will pass through the meshes of the mattress as represented' in Fig. 5.
1. The mattress frame herein described consisting of the combination of the cylindrical tubular side rails a, b, and the cylindrical tubular end rails c, d, and interposed grooved blocks e, made as shown, and bolts or equiva- IOO lent fastenings securing said side and end rails together.
2. The mattress trarne herein described consisting of the combination of the side rails ct, b, slotted at the ends as at a', the end rails c, d, and interposed grooved blocks e as shown means for securing the end rail d to the side rails, and the bolts c2, for securing the end rail c to the side rails, movable in the slots ct thereof, nuts c4 and eye-bolts c6 engaging the bolts c2, substantially as described.
3. In a mattress frame, the combination of side rails ct b, and end rails c, d, one of which is slotted from end to end to receive the end of the mattress, and short bolts 2, passing through said slotted end rail and nuts 3, which When tightened contract the slotted end rail and thereby firmly clamp and hold the end of the mattress, substantially as described.
4. ln a mattress frame, the combination of side rails a, b, and end rails c, d, one of which is slotted from end to end to receive the end of the mattress, and short bolts 2, passing through said slotted end rail and nuts 3, Which when tightened contract the slotted end rail and firmly clamp and hold the end ofthe mattress, and straps d embracing said end rail, the ends of which are connected with the side rails, whereby said end rail may be rotated when said straps are loosened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
