My invention consists of improvements in hay knives consisting of a hay knife as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings-Figure 1 represents a side view of a hay knife embodying my invention, the lever being raised. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same knife the lever being lowered. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the knife as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents views of details of the knife. Fig. 5 represents a modified form of a handle.

Referring to the drawings A designates a hay knife consisting of a body B formed of a heavy longitudinally extending piece of wood or other material, adapted to rest upon the bale or other quantity of hay which is to be cut.

B designates a guard formed of an iron or other metallic plate secured in any suitable manner by rivets or nails to one side at one end of said body 13. At the inner end of the guard B secured thereto and to the body B is a metallic-stirrup C, the outer surface of which is flush with the outer side of the guard B and the top of the body B, for convenience in operating the knife. In the drawings the guard B is shown secured to the body B by means of two bolts D which pass through limbs of the stirrup and the body.

Pivoted within the stirrup O,is the end of a lever handle E, which is adapted to be raised or lowered alongside of the body B in rear of the guard B and has its rear portion or end curved for manipulating the same. Se cured to the lever E at F is a downwardly projecting knife G, having a curved edge facing the guard B. The upper end of the knife which is secured to the lever E, is fastened to a recess in the same so that the surface of the knife is flush with that ofthe lever, thereby offering no obstruction to the operation of the lever and knife. The front end of the body B is curved or rounded so as to offer less obstruction in the movement through or over the hay.

In Fig. 5 is shown a modified form of handle consisting of an iron rod fastened firmly to the lever at the place where the knife is fastened and extending perpendicular to the side of the lever as shown in the drawings. This construction permits the operator to use both hands in operating the lever which is of advantage in heavy cutting and allows the blade to enter its full length into the hay.

The knife is provided with a beveled edge on the same principle as the cutter on a mower, the straight edge being next to the stack.

The knife is operated, by, first raising the lever and then pressing down on the same bringing the edge of the blade in contact with the material to be cut, at the same time pushing forward the body B. It will be noticed that the cutting operation is somewhat after the manner of a can opener and the device is easyand efficient in operation while at the same time simple in character.

What I claim as new, and desire to cover by Letters Patent, is

1. A hay knife having a body with a guard at its front end, a lever pivoted to said body, and a downwardly projecting knife blade secured to said lever, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A hay knife having a longitudinally ex tending body, a stirrup secured thereto, a lever secured at one end to said body and stirrup, and a knife blade secured to said lever, said parts being combined substantially as described. 1

3. A hay knife having a longitudinally extending body provided with a curved front end, a guard engaging the front end of said body and flush with the top of the same,a

stirrup at the rear of said guard having openings for bolts, said stirrup being flush with the outer side of said'guard and the top of said body, a lever pivoted in said stirrup and adapted to operate at the side of said body, said lever being provided with a recess in its side, the walls of said recess receiving a downwardly projecting knife blade, said blade being provided with a curved edge facing said guard, said parts being combined substantially as described.

4. A hay knife havinga longitudinally extending body provided with a curved front end and a guard engaging the same, a stirrup at the rear of said guard engaging the same and said body and a lever pivoted in said stirrup and provided with a recess receiving a downwardly projecting knife blade, and a 15 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 20 presence of two Witnesses.
