E G G C A S E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,838, dated November 28, 1893.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BOWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marengo, in the county of McHenry, State of Illinois, have invented" certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to construct an egg case of open work material having doors through whichobjectionable eggs can be removed, a central tube through which light can be admitted to the casein order that the eggs may be properly candled without removing them from the ease, and having a movable top.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1., is an isometrical representation of my improved egg case. Fig. 2, is a similar view, in which the doors and cover have been removed. Fig. 3 is an isometrical representation ofthe cover showing the rounded hooks.

The case in this instance is of rectangular form, and constructed of sheet metal in open or skeleton form, in the bottom l, of which are located springs 2. A cover 3, is provided with swiveled hooks 4. Each of the sides of the openings is provided with openings 5, and lids 6, have a hinge connection with the cross bars 7, and hooks 8, hold the lids closed. A tube 9, in this instance of glass, is located in the bottom of the case, and extends in the lengthwise direction of the case.

In use suitable packing (excelsior for instance) is placed in the bottom of the case upon the springs 2, forming a yielding support. The lids are fastened in their closed position. The case is tted with eggs and packing placed on top, and the cover is pressed down untilthe hooks engage the under edge of the cross bars, the springs 2, preventing the breaking of the eggs.

By the employment of the tube, light can be admitted to the center of the case, and the eggs can be properly candled without removing them from the case, and should an objectionable egg be discovered the lid nearest to it can be opened and the egg removed without disturbing the others.

While I have employed a central tube of glass it is evident that it may be made from open Work material.

The cover is made movable in the lengthwise direction of the ease and they hooks will engage any of the cross bars, according to the number of eggs within the case.

This case is intended to be placed inside of a receiving box, and any number can thus be packed,so that when it becomes necessary to candle the eggs it may beaccomplished without removing and handling themiseparately, as the light placed within the central tube will be sufficient to enable each egg to be seen.

I claim as my inventionl An egg case of rectangular form of perforated sheet metal having each side provided with openings, a door for each opening having a hinged connection with the case, and a fastening device therefor, a fixed bottom supporting springs, a central glass tube, a cover adjustable in the lengthwise direction of the case and hooks supported by the cover engaging the case.
