A. PAULS.
KNIFE HANDLE. No. 509,762. PatentedNov. 28,1893.
WNNESSES: INVENTOR:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST PAULS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
KNIFE-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 509,762, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed August 31,1893. Serial No. 484,510. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST PAULS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in knife handles and the invention consists in the novel features set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which Figure 1 is an inside elevation of the shell without the lining. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing'the shell with the lining. Fig. 3 is a section along 00 as Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section along y y Fig. 2.
The handle shown in the drawings is a razor handle but of course the invention can be applied to other handles such as handles for pocket knives, erasers, button hooks and other articles. Each half of the knife handle consists of a trough shaped shell or scale A of such material as tortoise shell, hard rubber, celluloid or the like. The shell or scale A is provided with supports B. A metal lining C rests on the supports and is retained in position bythe edges D of the scale overlapping the lining, as seen in Fig. 4. The supportsB are shown perforated for the insertion of rivets or pivots, the lining 0 being similarly perforated for that purpose. The edges D are caused to overlap the lining C by means of any suitable press or die brought into action after the lining C is placed on the supports B. The overlapping edges D prevent the edge of the knife when closing into the handle from catching or striking against the metal lining whereby the knife edge might be injured.
This structure of handle is light and strong witnesses.
