J. M. SOHLESINGER. LAGE, VEILING, OB. RIBBON HOLDER. NO. 509,691. Patented Nv. 28,1893.
liy].
UNIIED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JULIUS M. SCIILESINGER, OF SAN J 0S, CALIFORNIA.
LACE,VEILING, OR RIBBON HOLDER.
SPEG'I'FIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,691, dated November 28, 1893. Applicattion filed August 30,1893. Serial No. 4.224.401. (N01110(181.)
T0 aZZ wlwm it may concern:
Be t known that I, J ULIUS M. SCHLESINGER, a aitizen of theUnited States, residing at San Jos, Santa Clara county, State of Oalifornia, IIFI6 invented an Improvement in Laae, Veiling, or Ribbon Holders; and I hereby dealare tl1e following to be a full, alear, and exaat desaription of the same.
My invention relates to a device for holdng laae, veiling, ribbon fringe, trimming, and other material wbioh is usually aarried in considerable lengths, and whiah it is advisablo to wind smoothly upon aards or bolders.
It aonsists essentially of a base er bases having vertiaal cylindriaal poets at their op posite ende and thin flat bolders having inbular and poets aorresponding With those upon the bases, and adapted to slip over the posts of the bases, so that they may be easily plaaed upon the supports or removed therefroxn.
It also eonsists in a meahansm for supporting and rotating tbe bolders so that the material aan he easily and smoothly Wound upon the bolders.
In the aaaompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a view of the bolder in position to wind. Fig. 2 is a modifiaation. Figs. 3 and 4 show the bolder upon the stands.
A represents the base, of whieh tliere may be as many as may be desired, or a single base may be provided with a number of ver tiaal aylindriaal stems or posts 13, which are fixed permanently at opposite ends or sides of the base A.
0 represents the bolder whiah is a thin flat aard made of wood, heavy pasteboard, or other snitable or desired material, and of suffiaient length and Width to acaommodate the material whiab is to be wound upon it.
At opposite ends or sides of tbe bolder 0 are fixed the tubular poets D, the ends of whiah may be enlarged and ornamented, and are preferably i'ormed Witb diverging mouths as shown at E, so that they may readily slip over the posts B. The tubular openings are of suffiaient depth t0 admit of the aards or supports being slipped upon tbe standards B, while they are retained in a vertiaal upright position, so tbat a nnn1ber of tbe aards may be plaeed side by side in a oase or any other position where they may be easily inspeated without removal. If it is desired to remove eitber of the aards for the purpose of taking, off a portion of the aontents, they are readily lifted from the stand or base n pon whiah they are supported.
In order to aonveniently wind the material upon tbe aards or supports, I have shown soakets F fixed aentrally open the bolders as shown. In some aases, as shown in Fig. 2, a single soaket may be suleient, and this is fitted upon one of the posts B, so that the bolder will rotate upon the post to allow the material te be wound or unwound upon it. In other aases I have shown a base with snp porting posts at opposite ends. T0 one of these poets is hinged a spindle G whiah is adapted to enter one of the soakets F by sim ply turning tl1e latter upward out of a horizontal line. Through the opposite post passes a shaft or spindle H whiah is slidable horizontally in the post, and is normally pusbed inward by. the aation of a spring I. The i11- ner end of this sl1aft is made polygonal, as shown at J, and fits a aorresponding polygonal opening in the soaket F at that end.
Upon the onter end of the spindle H is a crank K by whiah it may be tmned.
The aard or bolder C is plaaed upon the apparatus by tnrning the spindle G npward around its hinge joint, to allow the soaket F upon chat side to be slipped upon the spindle upon whiab it turns freely. By pulling the shaft II ontwardly it is retraated against tbe tension of the spring sufiiaiently to allow the polygonal end J to enter the soaket F at that end, when, by releasing the shaft, the spring I will hold it in positon. By turning the crank K the bolder is rotated about the spindles and the material may be wound upon it or unwound upon it at will.
In nsing the device as a bolder for ribbon the size of it will be smaller than where t is used as a bolder for other trimmings.
Having thus desaribed my inventionwhat I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A bolder for laae, veiling, ribbons or tri1nmng aonsisting of a fiat aard or plate,
tubular posts fixed upon opposite sides of the aard and a base having aorresponding vertiaa1 standards at opposite ends upon whiah ICO the tubular posts upon which the aards are supported, substantiaily as herein described.
3. Cards 01 plates having tubular posts at the opposite sides adapted to fit upon ve1rti ca1 stationary standaards and be supported thereby, eentraiiy fixed sockets extending in- 15 wardly from the sides of the hoiders, and a support upon which said sockets are fitted and about which the aard is rotatabie, substantially as herein desoribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my zo hand.
J ULIUS M. SCI-ILESINGER.
