BEDSTEAD.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,920, dated November 14, 1865.

To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, J. P. DORMAN, of the city of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- The figure in the drawing represents a side elevation or' my improved bedstead with chair and chamber attached thereto.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction ota bedstead which may be used either for adults or small children. When used for the latter purpose, the combination ot' elastic india-rubber springs with a spiral spring so arranged that a gentle vihratory motion is given to the child when it is desired to put it asleep, which is done by a treadle connecting with the hed without any inconvenience to the person or nurse being able to prosecute their sewing or other work,"'tl1e simple using of the foot being all that is necessary. A slight change in the sacking makes it ready for adults, the arrangement of the springs rendering it an easy and comfortable bed.

To enable any one skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct a head-piece, A, of a suitable height and ornamental in appearance, with a pulley-wheel, a, let in from the top, and one, a', at the bottom. The foot-piece B has a plate, l), above, hinged to the top of it, to allow a free play to the framing b', (seen in dotted lines,) 011 which the sacking is placed, which play or movement will be apparent when the springs are compressed by the treadle or the weight of a person. Two of the springs C, above referred to, are of stout india-rubber, and are suspended from the top ofthe head-piece, and connect with the framing at a suitable distance below, the hinged plate of the foot-piece connecting with the other end thereof. The head ofthe framing is elevated higher than the foot, to allow for the settling down of it when the springs are compressed.

To make the india-rubber springs effective, in giving a steady and uniform motion to the bed, a spiral spring, D, is arranged horizontally underneath, one end of it connecting with the foot-piece, the vother end with a stout cord, c, extending to and over the pulley-wheels, herein referred to, and thence connecting with the head of the framing of the bed, the combination andarrangement of the spiral spring with the india-rubber springs operating as a check to any tendency on their part in giving a loose or irregular motion. A rocking or vibratory motion is given to the bed when it is used for babies or children, in putting them to sleep, by means ofa treadle, d, connecting with the head of the framing ot' the bed by a stout cord, el.

The head and foot pieces are kept steady and firm to their upright positions by a longitudinal bar, E, near the bottom of them.

The sacking F is intended for adults. It is fastened on one side ot' the framing. By removing it, throwing it to one side, the sacking Gr, below, may be used for children.

For convenience in case of sickness, I construct a chair, H, with sliding bars underneath, so that a chamber, It, may be easily slipped in or out when desired. rEhe back part ot' the chair rests on the top of the head-piece of the bed, and is attached to it temporarily in any suitable manner, and is supported on the front by a leg, j', fitting into a small socket under the. chair. In this position the chair may be used for adults. It' it is desired to use it for children, by removing it and attaching it to the foot-piece over the hingein thesame manner as the head-piece, a shorter leg being used 1. The construction of a bed having a spiral spring, D, so arranged in combination with the arrangeinentof elasticindia-rubber springs C, head-piece A, pulley-wheels a and a', cord c, and framing b', whereby a soft and easy motion is given to the bed, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
