UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. T. EDWVARDS, OF SANFORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
COMBINED SPRING-BED AND lNVA'LlD-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,844, dated January 7, 1902.
Application filed October 15, 1901. Serial No.78,684=. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, J AMES H. T. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sanford,in' the county of Moore and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Spring-Bed and Invalid-Ohair,ot' which the followingis aspecification. i
Myinvention relatesto a combined springbed and invalid-chair; and the object of the same is to construct a deviceof this character which shall be simple in construction, shall present as neat an appearanceas an ordinary bed, and be readily convertible into a chair without havingto remove the person therefrom. This object is accomplished by.
the simple and novel construction described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device when used as a chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my device on the line 2 2,
Fig. 3, when used as a bed with lever down.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of my device on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, used as a bed.
bars 7. Springs 8 are secured to the slats 6' at the lower ends and to a woven-wire mat tress 9 at their upper ends.
Hinged to the upper end of the section 5 is a head-section 10, comprising sides 11, aslat, 12, and a cross-bar 13. The mattress 9 is socured to the cross-bar13. The sides 11 are notchedat 14 to adapt them to be engaged by a yoke 15, pivoted to the sides 3 of the bed.
Hinged to the lower end of the sides 7 of the middle section 5 is a foot-section 16, comprising sides 17, a slat 18, and a footboard section and foot-section 16 in unison, round staples 20 are seated in the middle slat 6 and the slats12 and 18, respectively, and a lever 21, connected to the staples by means of apertured arms 22, 23, and 24. The lever 21 comprises a straight bar bearing the arm 24, which is integral'therewith. i
The arms 22 and 23 are pivotally secured by pins 25 to the lever 21. The arms 22, 23, and 24 are all rounded off at their upper ends at 21 to permit their moving in a vertical plane. The rounded staples 20 make it possible to swing the lever 21 up and secure it parallel to the bottom of the bed by a catch 26, seated in the side 3 of thebed. This is done when the device is used as a bed.
A catch 27, slidingly mounted in the foot 2, serves to engage the footboard 19 of the foot-section 16 and hold it up. I
Normally my device is used as'a bed, and in that case the lever 21 is swung up and secured by the catch 26 and thefoot-section 16,
secured by the catch 27.
When it is desired to convert it into a chair, the lever 21 and foot-section 16 are released and pressure brought to bear on the foot-section to force it down. This action will operate the lever 21 and tilt the head-section 10 up, the arm 22 serving as a fulcrum. When the head is inclined as much as desired, the yoke 15 is swung up to engage one of the notches 14 and the head secured.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a bed-frame, of a middle section of mattress-frame secured to the sides of said bed, a foot-section of mattress-frame hinged to said middle section, a head-section of mattress-frame hinged to said middle section, and a lever bearing a rigid arm and two pivoted arms, said rigid arm being pivoted to said foot-section and one of said pivoted arms being connected to said middle section and the other to said head-section, substantially asdescribed.
2. The combination with a bed-frame, of amiddle section of mattress-frame rigidly secured to said frame, a head-section of mattress-frame hinged to said middle section, a
and a catch for securing said lever when swung up.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- I TIGSSGS.
JAMES H. T. EDXVARDS.
