R. B. LAVIGNE. l
MEAT TENDBREB..
Patented Nov. 21, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-.
ROSE B. LAVIGNE, OF N ETV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR ,TO THE LAVIGNE du SCOTT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MEAT-TENDERER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,953, dated November 21, 1893.` Application led February 24, 1893. Serial No. 45.6 3,541. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RosE B. LAVIGNE, of New Haven,in thecounty'of New Haven and State of Connecticut', have invented a new Im provement in Meat-Tenderers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
1o and which said drawings constitute partof this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a view in side elevation of a meattenderer constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view thereof in Vertical transverse section on the line -x of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar view on the line 'g-y of the same figure; Fig. 4, a reverse plan view showing the dodging or alternation of the knives.
My invention relates to an improvement in 2o meat-tenderers, the object being to produce a simple and effective device, adapted to vbe readily cleaned.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in the combination, in a meat-tenderer,
with the frame thereof, of two knives Yconnected therewith in parallel planes, but separated from each other, and one of them being pivotally connected with the frame, a springactuated reciprocal clearer mounted in the 3oV frame, and located in the space between the said knives, and means for normally holding the knives in their closed or operating positions.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a frame A, provided at one end with a handle 4o A', and constructed with four lugs A2 A2, As A3, depending from its lower edge. Tothese lugs I pivotally attach two knife-holders B B', the former being furnished with corresponding lugs b b, formed on its upper edge, while thevlatter has `two corresponding lugs b b extending upward from its upper edge. The said lugs of the frame and the knife-holders are arranged to lit together in line, so as to receive two horizontal pins C C, which thus` 5o pivotally connect the knifeholders with the frame. Two long knives D D are respectively secured by means of rivets d, to the knitfe-l y holders, which are thereto vertically slotted,
as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 ot' the drawings.
This space receives the spring-actuated re-` y ciprocal clearer E,.which consists of a longrv rod, having a straight main-portion a little longer than the length of the knives, and two legs bent upward at a right angle to its mainportion, and passing through sleeves F F, forming extensions of the lugs A3 A3, of the frame, theV said legs being reciprocal in the said lugs for permitting the main-portion of the clearer to play up and down between the knives. Springs G G respectively encircling the legs of the clearer, and interposed between the lower faces of the lugs, and pins g, located in the clearer, exert a constant eort to throw the clearer to the limit of its outward movement, in which it stands about even with the edges of the knives, the limit of this movement being determined byv pins g g located near thepends of the legs, and arranged to engage with the upper faces of the said lugs. A thumb-screw II, mounted in the knife-holders B B about midwayof the length thereof, is provided for holding them in their vnormal or operating positions, in which they are prevented from swinging with respect to the frame, by means of the clearer E, which, although it is reciprocal in the plane of the knives, is fixed in the frame so far as lateral or swinging movement is concerned.
-In the use of the device, the clearer willbe pushed inward as the knives enter the meat, under the force of the blow given to the device, but when the force of this blow has been spent, and the device is lifted, the springs of the clearer will reassert themselves and push it outward to its normal position, whereby the knives will be assisted'in being cleared from the meat.`V Vhen it is desired to clean the device, the thumbscrew H, is turned so as to disconnect the two knife-holders, thus permitting oneot the knives/to be swung away from the other, and givingkample room between the same, is old, and I do not therefore claim that construction broadly.
I am also aware that a meat-tenderer having two parallelseries of knives of which one series-is adapted to be moved away from the other, is old.
Hav-ing fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a meat tenderer, the combination with the frame thereof, of two knives connected therewith in parallel planes, but separated from each other, and one of them being pivotally connected with the frame, a springactuated reciprocal clearer mounted inthe frame, and located in the space between the 31ol said knives, and means/for normally holding the knives in their closed orroperating positions, substantially as described.
2. Ina meat-tenderer, the combination with the frame thereof, of two knives pivotally connected with the said frame in parallel planes, but separated from each other,a spring-actuated reciprocal clearer mounted in the frame, and located in the space between the said knives which it holds against lateral movement, and means for normally holding the knives in their closed or operating positions.
3. In a meat-tenderer, the combination with the frame thereof, of two knife-holders pivoted to the said frame, two knives respectivel-y attached to the said holders, a springactuated reciprocal clearer located between the knives, which it holds against lateral movement, and means fornornially holding the knives in their closed or operating positions, substantially as set forth, and whereby the knives may be separated for cleaning the device.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification` in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
