PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM PEDER FEDEWA, OF BELDIN'G, MICHIGAN.
STOVEPlPE-FASTENER. 1.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,874, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed January19, 1893. Serial No. 458,953. (No model.)
provement in Stovepipe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved pipe connection intended especially for use in'fastening stove pipes in chimney holes and the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
7 In the drawings-Figure 1 is atop plan View. Fig. 2 is a cross section and Fig. 3 is I 5 a-longitudinal section of my improvement.
The connection is in the nature of a tube or sheet iron pipe folded together loosely and in connection with it- I employ an expanding and contracting device by which to spread or expand one and contract the other end of the tube.
In the construction shown and as preferred, the tube A is split or divided at a longitudinally with edges overlapping and the expanding and contracting device B is connected with it at its ends and on opposite sides of the split. By being connected with it at its ends I do not mean that the adjusting devices are connected to the extremities of the tube but rather to its end portion or on opposite tudinally divided tube and an expanding and sides of a point midway between its ends. When the fastener is in position the expanding and contracting device forces the overlapping edges firmly together making a per- 5 feet connection.
The expanding and contracting device shown comprises two levers O O pivoted together at D between their ends and preferably made with the parts don opposite sides of the pivot D diverging as shown. At their opposite ends the levers O are connected with the ends of the connecting tube on opposite sides of the split thereof. As shown and preferred the levers are formed in sections jointed together at E, the sections or parts Z being engaged by the adjusting device. This is preferably a screw shaft F connecting the parts I and threaded in one or in a nut alongside the same. .This nut may be fixed to or 56 separated from the sections as desired. All
' of the described devices except the handle end fof the shaft F are within the connection A and out of sight and in practice the handle end f of the shaft is arranged at the top of the connection so that it will not show from below.
In operation, one end of the connection is inserted in the chimney hole and the stove pipe is inserted in the other end of the connection tube. Now by properly turning the screw shaft the levers will be operated to expand the end of the tube in the chimney hole and contract that end in which the stove pipe is fitted clamping upon said stove pipe and within the chimney hole. Manifestly if the connection be clamped tightly upon the stove pipe before it is clamped in the chimney hole or vice versa, this does not stop the operation of the adjusting devices which may continue to operate until both ends of the connecting tubes are spread or contracted to properly hold in or on the part it engages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pipe connection provided with an expanding and contracting device by which to spread one end and contract the other end thereof substantially as set forth.
2. A pipe connection consisting of a longione end and contract the other end of the connection substantially as set forth.
3. In a pipe connection the combination with the tube divided longitudinally of the expanding and contracting section's pivoted together between their ends and connected at one end with one end of the tube on opposite sides bf the division and at their other ends with the other end of the tube also on opposite sides of the longitudinally divided and operating devices substantially as set forth.
4.. In a pipe connection the combination of the split tube the lovers pivoted together between their ends and connected at their opposite ends with the tube substantially as dedivided connection tube, the expanding and contracting levers pivoted together between their ends and connected at their ends to the connection tube and the operating bolt con- I 5 necting said levers at one end all substantially as set forth.
