Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL GROVE, OF 'ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVEPIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 653,384, dated July 10, 1900- Application filed December 23, 1899. Serial No. 741,432. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Stovepipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stovepipes, and
more particularly to means for securing sections of Stovepipe together adj ustably, whereby the pipe may be extended or contracted in length, as may be required.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described-hereinafter and defined in the appended claim in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of two sections of pipe embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
The reference numerals 1 and 2 designate sections or lengths of stovepipe adapted to be connected telescopically. The drawings show the lower end of one section and the upper end of the other, and as all of the sections of a pipe are to be alike in construction the illustration will suffice for all. The upper edge of each section is bent inward to form an annular inclined flange 3, 'andtheir lower edges are flared or turned outward to form an inclined flanged oppositely disposed with relation to the flange 3. The lower por-' tion of each section is formed along the longitudinal seam thereof with a series of indentations 5, into which a set-screw 6 is adapted to engage. The screw 6 extends through an internally-threaded block or nut 7, arranged within a pocket or housing 8, formed by pressing out the metal near the top edge of the section. The upper flange 3 is recessed at the point 9 to accommodate the seam or rib formed by the joined laps or edges of the adj acent section.
It will be apparent that the improved construction above described permits of the ready adjustment of the section to either lengthen or shorten the pipe and affords a ready means for securing the sections together.
An important feature of the invention is found in the fact that the flanges 3 and 4: insure smoke-proof joints at whatever point the sections are secured, and if the sections are extended their full length the flange 3 of one section will interlock with the flange 4 of the adjoining section, thus preventing the disconnection of the sections.
I claim- The combination with a stovepipe-section formed with an inwardly-extending annular recessed flange, and a housing or pocket; of a second section fitting within the first-named section and having an outwardlyflared flange, and'a series of indentations; a nut secured in the housing or'pocket; and a setscrew extending through the housing and nut.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL GROVE.
