UNITED STAT-ES PATENT OFFICE. 7
AUGUST RINK AND CARL RUPPEN'IHAL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFIOATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 508,761, dated November 14, 1893. Application filed May 9, 1893. Serial No 473.599. (No model.)
is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
Our invention consists of a head adapted to support one end of a lamp chimney, arms to embrace the side thereof, a shank which is fitted in said head, a handle which is swiveled on said shank, and brushes or cleaners connected with expansible arms on said shank, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The figure represents a perspective view of a lamp chimney cleaner embodying our invention.
Referring to the drawing: A designates a head on which one end of a lamp chimney may be rested, the same having armsB which are adapted to embrace the side of the chimney, and thus provide means for firmly retaining the chimney on the head.
Projecting from what may be termed the under side of the head, is acollar C, said head and collar each having a spiral-opening therein, continuous of the other, to receive the spiral shank D, one end of which has the handle E. swiveled thereon, and the other end is provided with expansible arms F to which latter are attached the cleaners or brushes G.
The operation is as follows: The brushes are inserted in the chimney, and the latter rested at one end on the head A, the hand pressing the arms B- against the chimney. Then the handle is drawn in opposite directions, whereby the shank D receives rotary motions, and the arms F fly out owing to embrace or clamp the chimney are made of 7 wire or other flexible or elastic material, so as to be readily closed and opened. The head A is formed with a flange on its rim, so as to inclose the end of the chimney, the better to retain it in place thereon.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lamp chimney cleaner consisting of a head with spring arms on opposite sides of the same, a boss on said head with a spiral opening therein continuous of an opening in the head, a spiral shank movable in said opening in the head and boss, expansible arms with brushes on one end of the said shank and ahandleswiveled on the other-end of the same, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A head having a flanged rim and spring arms on opposite sides thereof, a boss connected with said head and havingan opening therein continuous of one in the head, a spiral shank movable in said openings and having a swiveled hand-1e at one end, and elastic arms with brushes thereon on the other end of said shank, said parts being combined substantially as described.
AUGUST RINK. CARL RUPPENTHAL.
