BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 508,577, dated November 14, 1893.
Application 51911 December 19, 1892- Seiial No. 455,566. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM O. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Building-Blocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in building blocks, and consists in providing as a newv article of manufacture, a building block molded of plastic clay having means for securing the blocks invertical order in the wall, and constructed to receive joggles for uniting the ends and closing the transverse vertical opening between the ends of the blocks. With these ends in view, my invention consists of certain, features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

To further secure the blocks in position, that is to prevent the tipping or rocking of the blocks or such movement of a single block, during the construction of the wall or of the blocks composing the top course, and to close the transverse opening between the ends of the blocks, recesses as fare formed in the end portions of the blocks, as shown in the drawings, into which a joggle piece 13 of the form shown in Fig. 4 is placed, as shown in Fig. l by which a back support is formed for the mortar used to form the joint, by which a flow of air through the wall is prevented. This latter or secondary use of the joggle is of great importance, as the side wall of the block is so thin as to form little or no support for the mortar which without the support of the joggle will soon fall out and leave an opening in the wall. To strengthen the block for the purpose of supporting heavy walls, vertical division Walls or supports it are provided as shown in the drawings, thus dividing the interior of the block into three compartments.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a building block having on its under side a broad central longitudinal recess, on its upper portion a rib corresponding with said recess, and at its ends recesses f, substantially as set forth.
