Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SONNEMA, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Genterville, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern Holders and Reflectors for Carriages; and I.do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a lantern holder and reflector for carriages, and has for its object to provide a device to be secured to the under side of a carriage box or similar structure for carrying an ordinary lantern and reflecting its light forward and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the various parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1. is a side View of my device with one wing of the reflector removed, the horizontal position of said reflector being indicated in dotted outline; Fig. 2. a plain view with the top plate removed and Fig. 3. a detail showing one air pipe of lantern to indicate position of fastenings.

Like parts are indicated by same letters in all of the figures.

The device is constructed preferably of sheet metal havinga polished reflecting sur-' face upon the side toward the lantern, and comprises a top plate,aback plate or reflector, and abottom plate or flap.

A. indicates the bottom of a carriage or similar structure to which the device is attached.

B is the top plate and is firmly attached to bottom A. in any suitable manner and has dependent flanges O. O. O. The reflector J. having wings J. I". and loop I is hinged to the flange O and the flange G.-has downwardly opened sockets F. F. The bottom plate L is hinged at H 'to the opposite end of reflector J. and has hooks M at each corner and is provided with spring K. having tangential arms K and, loop K".

and has a slot 0 through which passes the adjustable button or hook N.

The use and operation of the device are as follows: The plate B. being secured to the forward part of the bottom of the carriage or other like article, the reflector hinged thereto, with its flap L. when not in use, are liftedto their horizontal positions and secured by button N as shown in dotted line in Fig. 1'. The lantern, having side air pipe G. with upper horizontal portion G and lower horizontal portion G. is placed with its top portion be tween the flanges O and O. Thehinged plateD is turned back, to get the arms E. out of the way forthis purpose. When the lantern is in its proper position the plate D. is released when the spring I. causes it to return to its vertical position bringing arms E. horizontal and their ends engage sockets F. and abut against flange O. and they engage the under sides of the upper horizontal portion G of said air pipe. The lantern is thus carried on said arms E. and is easily and quickly attached and detached. To bring the reflector J. into use, turn the button N. releasing the same, and it will at once swing to its vertical position, where it is held, by hooks M engaging lower horizontal portion G" of said air pipe pressed down by spring K.

. .I claim- 1. The combination with the plate B. carrying a spring actuated clutching device for holding a lantern, of the adjustable reflector J. hinged thereto and provided with spring actuated hooks for attachment to said lantern substantially as set forth.

2. The combinationwith the plate B. carrying the spring actuated plate D having the arms E. for holding the lantern and the ad justable reflector J. hinged thereto and pro- 1Vld6d WltllllOOkS for attachment to said lantern substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the plate B having flange C. and hinged plateD having arms E. and providedwith spring I arranged substantially as described and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. The combination of the plate B having flange O. the hinged plate D having arms E. and provided with spring I and the reflector J. hinged to plate B. substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the plate B. having flange 0.: the hinged plate D having arms E and provided with spring I. and the reflector J.: hinged to plate B and having the hooks 5 M. arranged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

6. The combination of the plate B. having the flange O. the hinged plate D. having the arms E and provided with spring I. the re- IO fleetor J. hinged to plate 13. and the spring actuated plate L. having hooks M. and hinged to the reflector J. substantially as described and f or the purposes set forth.
