SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,373, dated November 7, 1893.
Application filed June 15I 1893K. Serial No. 477,644. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. DAVIS, a citizen of the United Statesyand a resident of South Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State. of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Electric Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improved attachments for railway cars driven by electric motors, and has for its object to devise means whereby the motors and other armatures below the floor of the car may be easily and conveniently inspected from within the/car.
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and general combination of parts whichA will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of the floor of a car with the improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section of a part of the said floor and through the said attachment. Fig. 3 isa detail perspective View of part of the attachment.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts of the several figures in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the floor of the car, the latter being driven by an electric motor located be- In the iioor, directly above motor 2, a hole 3 is cut, and around the under edge thereof is a metallic frame 4, which projects inward beyond'the edges of the walls of the hole and form a supporting flange. Between the said metallic frame and the under surface of the lioor of the car is inserted a strip 5 of fabric or suitable cushioning material, which covers the upper surfaceof the said flange of the metallic frame, and rests on the said strip, and, fitting in the hole 3, is a plate 6, of' glass of sufficient thickness to resist fracture. It will he understood that a number of the platesl 6 may be employed and in order to prot-ect the same from above, a guard 7 is employed which is hinged at one side as at 8, and is supplied with a projecting lip 9 at the opposite side with an opening 10 therein, through which a staple is adapted to pass and be engaged by a hook 11 pivotally connected -to the. upper part of the said guard. The said guard is preferably made of cast metal and is formed with a series of square openings l2, with rounded corners 13,it being understoodthat the said openings will be of a proper size to prevent entrance of the foot thereinto, but at the same time permit a ready inspection of therworkings of the motor audits armature under the car by those seated Within the car. This attachment is also beneficial to those having the car in control, to'ascertain whether all the mechanism is properly operating, and it will be seen that the said guard which is in the form of a hinged door or trap may be raised at will, and the plate of glass removed if so desired to gain access to the motor, and the mechanism in connection therewith.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In combination with acar door or analogous Vcovering having an electric motor beneath the same and provided with an opening therethrough, f a metallic frame secured against the under side of the Hoor and projecting inwardly beyond the walls of the said opening to form supporting flanges, a cushion interposed between tho said frame and the floor,
