Be it known that I, EDWIN F. PORTER, of Dorchester, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Heating and Ventilating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in car heating and ventilating apparatus and its object is to provide a device for heating and ventilating cars using electricity as an operative means, although other heating means may be employed.
A further object is to remove all danger of fire which might result but for the construction embodied in my device.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a sectional view taken transversely through the seat of a car. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a port in the floor of the car under the seat for the admission of outside air. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing the wheels of the car and the floor above with the port shown in Fig. 2 shown located between the trucks.

A is the car seat showing the usual heel board Bwhich has a slot O communicating with the closed space D under the seat of the.
car.
E is a board located in front of the heel board D supported by the support F a distance from the floor making a passage under the board E and forming a guard to protect passengers against contact with the electric heater L.
H is a screen closing the top of the duct I located between the heel board B and the board E.
J is an inclined plane extending from the lower edge of slot O to the floor K of the car.
L is a heating coil supported by the metallic support M insulated by the mica N held in the clearance hole in the lug O which is held in place by screw I.
Q is a fireproof lining to the board E and R is a similar fireproof lining on the heel board D located behind the heating coil L.
S is a metallic washer between the lug O and the asbestos R for the purpose of strengthening the support of the coil against the asbestos.
T is a port through the floor K of the car communicating between the space D under the seat of the car and the outside air; the location of the port T is shown in diagram, Fig. 3, as midway between the wheel where it is protected by downhanging flaps U from the splash of water fromthe wheels IV, the flaps cooperating with the port for the admission of fresh air without the objectionable admission of water in wet weather. A slide V controls the port T making it possible to vary the amount of fresh air taken into the car.
The operation is as follows: the coil L being energized and heated causes the air located between to rise in the direction of the arrow W; this draws in air from the space D through slot C producing a slight rarefication in space D which causes the fresh. air to flow in from the outside through the port T. The space G being somewhat restricted. does not interfere with the circulation through the slot C. The inclined plane J is for the purpose of ejecting dust through the opening G which otherwise would accumulate rendering the heater liable to fire due to the possible breaking of a coil. The space G is for the above purpose although incidentally a small volume of air will circulate through this space and may be of some slight advantage in heating inas much as it will come from a cooler area, the bottom of the car.
The electric heater L and its supporting means are not specifically described and claimed in the present application but form the subject matter of another application filed by me January 29, 1906, Serial No. 298,347.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth. a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a vehicle, a heel board, an electric heater suspended from said heel board and insulated therefrom, a valve-controlled opening between the atmosphere and the closed space under the car seat, a slot located in said heel board and communicating with the duct in which the heater is located and forming a passage for the air from said valve opening to and. around said. heater, and a guard located in front of said heater.
2. In a vehicle, a heel board, an electric the board E and heel board B heater suspended from said heel board. and insulated therefrom, a valve-controlled opening between the atmosphere and the closed space under the car seat, a slot located in said heel board and communicating with the duct in which the heater is located. and forming a passage for the air from said valve opening to and around said heater, a guard located in front of said heater, and a screen secured to said heel-board and guard through which the heated air passes into the car.
3. In a vehicle, a heel board, an electric heater suspended from said heel board and insulated therefrom, a valve-controlled opening between the atmosphere and the closed space under the car seat, a slot located in said heel board and communicating with the duct in which the heater is located and forming a passage for the air from said valve opening to and around said heater, and. a guard located in front of said heater and supported above the floor of the car leaving a passage between said guard and said floor.
In a vehicle, a heel board, an electric heater suspended from said heel board and insulated therefrom, a valve-controlled opening between the atmosphere and the closed space under the car seat, a slot located in said heel board communicating with the duct in which the heater is located and forming a passage for the air from said valve opening to and around said heater, and means for guiding dust from below the heater.
5. In a vehicle, an electric heater, a valve controlled opening for the atmosphere to and around. said heater, a guard located in front of said heater and forming a duct for the air entering through said valve-controlled opening, and means for guiding the dust away from the vicinity of said heater.
