SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,820, dated October 31, 1893.

Application filed June 15, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, CHARLES KELLEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing' at Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Commodes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to commodes, and has for its object to provide a commode that shall be cleanly in its use and constructed and ven tilated in such manner as to prevent the escape into the apartment in which it is placed, of offensive odors and harmful gases.

A' further object is the attainment of these Sanitary benefits by mechanism capable of easy operation and simple in its construction.

To these ends the invention consists in the commode having the construction and com bination of parts hereinafter specified and illustrated in theannexed drawingsin which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a commode constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a section from front to rear; Fig. 3 a cross section.

In the drawings A designates a suitable boxlike compartment designed to receive the vessel or receptacleB, and to serve as the bench or seat, and having in front a hinged door C for the removal and replacement of the ves- B, and on its top a hinged cover D. The top a beneath the cover D is provided with the usual hole E and in connection with the latter I preferably employ the device shown in my Patent No. 465,862, of December 29, 1891, to automatically keep the same closedwhen the commode is not in use. Said device comprises in general, a pivoted or hinged plate F adapted to cover the hole E on its under side in an air tight manner, and a hinged supplemental seat f, that When depressed is adapted to automatically swing said plate away from the opening.

attached to said fixed collar G is a vertically movable collar H conforming in shape to the other and fitting the same closely. The lower edge of the 'fixed collar G comes to such a plane as not to interfere with the movement into and out of the compartment A of the vessel B, and it is the function of the movable collar H to bridge over the space thus left, by having its lower portion to enter and closely fit the upper open end of the Vessel B, when at the lower limit of its motion, while its upper end remains around the lower portion of the collar G. When raised to the upper limit of its motion the lower edge of the collar H is carried entirely out of the Vessel, and clear of the same, so as to permit it to be moved. The collar H is made to fit the Vessel B so close as to make the joint water tight and practically air tight. The collars G and H thus provide a closed passage from. the opening E to the Vessel, so that no urine or other matter can splash or get outside of the latter. The tightness of the joint between the Vessel and the collar His added to by the provision of a horizontal fiange h at the vertical center of the collar which rests upon the upper edge of said'vessel. The connection between the collars G' and H consists of vertical slots g in the former that are engaged by hooks h', h' secured to the latter. When raised the collar H is secured in place by giving it a slight horizontal turn (it being loose enough on the collar G for this) to place its hooks in horizontal extension g' at the upper end of the slots g. To lower the collar it is simply necessary to disengage the hooks from the horizontal slots, whereupon it will drop to place of its own weight. Instead of this arrangement for holding the collar H raised the outer side of the fixed collar could be slightly enlarged near the upper limit of motion of the top edge of said collar H so that the friction between the two collars would serve to lock them together. The flange h is useful to raise and lower the collar.

To facilitate the removal and replacement of thevessel B, I provide rollers 'i on the bot- -tom of the compartment A, while to insure its being readily placed in alignment with the collar H its rear handle b can be made to strike either the rear wall of said compartment or a projection therefrom. side guides may be employed for the like purpose.

Preferably the Vessel B is partially filled with water in which some disinfectant has been placed.

To Ventilate the structure I run a pipe J from the rear wall of the compartment, near its top, into a chimney or other fine (not shown), for theegress of air, while for its inlet, I provide a small opening L in one side and close to the bottom of the compartment. As by reason of the door C, coverD and plate F, the compartment is completely closed at all other points, a strong draft will be caused by the relative arrangement of the inlet L and the outletJ to the chimney, which will quickly carry off impure air or gases with the com partment A. An opening min the side of the collar G nearest the pipe J serves to permit the escape of foul air from within the same and the Vessel B.

Preferably a hood ?I is employed to conceal the opening L.

What I claim to be new in my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a commode, the combination with a seat having an opening, of a two-part oollar depending from the under side of the seat about said opening, one part having a depending portion to fit within a Vessel, below the opening, and one movable on the other substantially as shown and described.

2. In a commode, the combination with a seat having an opening, of a two-part collar depending from the under side of the seat about said opening, one part having a depending portion to fit within a Vessel, below the opening, one part of said collar being vertically movable upon the other part, substantially as shown.

3. In a commode, the combination with a seat I having an opening, of a two-part collar depending from the under side of the seat about said opening, one part having a depending portion to fit within a Vessel below an opening m, one part of said collar being vertieally movable upon the other part, and having a horizontal fiange to rest upon said Vessel.

4. In a commode, the combination with a seat having an opening, of a two'part collar depending from theundersideofiheseatabout said opening,onepart having a depending portion to fit within a Vessel, below the opening, one of said parts having Slots, and the other part having hooks to engage the same, substantially as shown and described.
