Description

(No ModeL) A. SOHERRER.
WINDOW.
N0.- 508,347. Patented Nov. 7, 1893.
UNITE STATES ADOLPHE SCHERBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
wmoow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,347, dated November '7, 1893.
' Application filed March 9, 1893- Serial No. 465,341. (No model.)
To all whom. it may-concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPHE SOHERRER, a citizen of Alsace, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The objectof this inventionis to furnish means for readily operating a window sash and the invention consists in the novel features pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1, is a face elevation of a window. Fig. 2, is an edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a section along a: as Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail sectional view of a catch. Fig. 5, is a detail View of a modification.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a frame or casing in which travels or slides the window sash B. The latter is supported by a hinge or pivots C so that on pressing back the spring or catch D the sash B can be swung on the joint or hinge O to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 thus making the outside of the'sash accessible as for example in cleaning.
The joint or pivots O are supported by eyes or perforated arms E traveling on the bar or guide F. To the lower of the eyes E is secured a spring G held by the brace or finger H and when the sash B is lowered the spring G tends to return or raise the sash. A case or tubular housing I suitably applied will protect the spring. j 1
The guide or bar F is made in form of a rack for engagement by detent or pawl K pressed by a spring into engagement with the rack. In Figs. 1 to 4 therack is shown with inclined or undercut teeth allowing the detent K with the sash B to move in opposition to the action of the spring or actuator G but said catch or detent K when in engagement with the rack F will prevent the spring from moving the sash so that the latter can be held or kept open. 1
The detent is shown supported ina case or housing L on the lower eye E. Said detent K has a pin M engaging an arm N which is feathered or adapted to slide on bar 0 but which cannot swing or turn independently of said bar. By making the bar 0 angular in cross-section and the hole in the arm N of is withdrawn against the action of its spring I thus leaving the sash B free to be raised by its spring or actuator G.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the detent or catch K of Fig. 1 is replaced by the catches K" operating on the gear wheel R in the well known way of the catches on spring roller shades. The wheel R gears into rack F and the detents K prevent the wheel R from rotating and the spring Gfrom moving the sash until by suddenly jerking the sash and then releasing it the detents K are thrown out of action. The rack F in Fig. 5 need not have inclined or undercut teeth.
The drawings show a spring G on only one side of the sash but manifestly both sides of the sash can be provided not only with springs but also with detent and releasing mechanisms.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination of a vertical ratchet bar, a sash adapted to swing and rise and fall on the ratchet bar, a detent mechanism for holding the sash in and releasing it from engagement with the ratchet bar, and a spring for automatically raising the sash when released, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a window sash,
and an actuator or spring therefor, of a rack or detent bar F on which the sash swings and slides vertically, and a releasable detent for engaging said bar, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a window sash, and an actuator or spring therefor, of a rack or detent bar on which the sash swings and slides vertically, a releasable detent for engaging the bar, and a releasing handle for the detent, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a window sash and an actuator or spring therefor of a rack ordetent bar F and'a releasable detent for engaging the bar, said sash being provided with suitable eyes or guides E adapted to travel on the bar, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a window sash and an actuator or spring therefor of a rack or detent bar F and a releasable detent for engaging the bar, said sash being jointed to suitable eyes or guides Eadapted to travel on the bar and a catch D for preventing the sash from swinging on its joint, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a window sash 10 bar, an arm N connected to the detent and my hand in the presence of two subscribing 15 witnesses.
