PRESS FOR REMOVABLE LIDS OR FOLLOWERS FOR RECEPTACLES, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,304, dated November 7, 1893.
Application filed April 21,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, BENEDICKT GOLDENBER- GER, Sr., of Madison, in the countyofDane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Removable Lids or Followers for Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in presses for removable lids or followers for receptacles, the object being to provide means for keeping corn-beef, corn-pork, sauerkraut, pickles and like articles completely submerged in a compact mass in the liquor or brine in which they are packed.
With this end in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of my improvement with the barrel shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view of the press and the barrel, on line wa: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a modification.
A represents a barrel orother suitable receptacle adapted to contain fish, meats, pickles or other articles usually preserved in a liquid and B is a removable cover or follower preferably constructed in two parts, the said parts when assembled being somewhat less in diameter than the diameter of the receptacle.
The upright O of the press is provided on one of its sides with a series of notches I), while its opposite surface is perfectly smooth and straight. A movable yoke D is adapted to embrace the upright G, and be moved up and down thereon. The yoke D is composed of two parallel bars 0, which are loosely secured together by the bolts d, d, as shown. On the bolt (1' is loosely mounted a block e,
' the inner face of which rests against the side of upright (3 directly opposite the notches b,
and when the yoke is moved up or dowmonthe upright O the block 8' is moved out of contact with said upright, but when the yoke is at rest on the upright, the block firmly rests against said upright and when pressure is ap- 1893- SerialNc. 471,334. (No model.)
plied on the former the latter is firmly locked against displacement.
The yoke D is supported on the upright C by means of the bolt d, which latter engages and rests in the notches b as shown in the drawings To the bottom of upright O is secured a base or bottom 1", which is adapted to rest on the removable cover or follower B, for the purpose hereinafter to be explained. I
To one side of the receptacle A is secured a staple g, the looped end of which projects a suitable distance above the sides of said receptacle, while the opposite side of the receptacle A is provided with an L-shaped hook it. The press is operated by a bar E, one end of which is adapted to enter the looped end of staple g, while its opposite end or a portion of the bar near its opposite end is adapted to be pushed under hook h, whereby it is removably held therein.
The articles contained within the barrel or receptacle are kept submerged and in a compact mass in their liquor or brine, in the following manner:The bottom f of the press is first placed on the sectional follower so that the former rests on both parts of the latter; the yoke D is then adjusted on the upright 0 so that the upper end of block 6 carried by yoke D will project some little distance above the sides of the barrel A. One end of the bar or lever E is then inserted in the looped end of staple g and the lever is then brought in contact with the upper end of block e, after which pressure in a downward direction is applied until the lever or bar comes in contact with the top of the barrel or receptacle at which time the lever or bar E is moved laterally under the L-shaped hook where it is held against displacement. By this operation it will be apparent that the pressure applied on the block e forces the movable top or follower downwardly, which in turn forces the contents of the receptacle into a compact mass on the bottom thereof.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the upright O is provided with a series of holes 2 and is adapted to move up and down in the slotj located in the bar E. One end of the bar E is adapted to be removably secured in an opening located in one of the handles of the receptacle, while the opposite end of said bar is adapted to move in and out of engagement with the oppositely located notched handle. The upright G is operated for the purpose hereinbefore described by means of a screw or plug 7a, which is inserted in a hole directly beneath the bar E, and as the screw projects a short distance on either side of said upright, the latter is prevented from sliding up through the slot located in the bar E.
It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my invention and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a receptacle, and removable follower located therein, of an upright resting upon the follower, said upright provided with openings, a device held in one of the openings, hooks or loops on the opposite edges of the receptacle, and a locking lever held by these engaging hooks or loops, said locking lever adapted to bear down upon the device held in the opening, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a receptacle, of removable follower located therein, and an upright one face of which is provided with a series of notches, a yoke carried by said upright and adapted to engage and be supported in said notches, a block carried by said yoke, a lever adapted to rest on the block and means carried by the receptacle for securing the lever against displacement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
