Description

(No Model.) I W. s. STONE & G. W. REAM,
SIDE HILL PLOW.
No. 507,693. Patented Oct. 31, 1.893.
firlzjm 'ssz's [again 0125 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. STONE AND GEORGE W. BEAM, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE BUOHER & GIBBS PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SlD E-HILL PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 507,693, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed January 31, 1893. Serial No. 460,471- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. STONE and GEORGE W. BEAM, citizens of, the United States, and residents of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Side-Hill Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in side hill plows, and consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1., of the accompanying drawings is a side elevation of a side hill plow illustrating our invention. Fig.2, is a perspective of detail from the under side rear enlarged. Fig. 3, is a similar view of the same portion from the upper side showing switch bar in position, and Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the upper portion of the standard and parts .attaohed thereto.
Referring to Fig. 1, A represents the mold board, which is pivotally secured to the bottom portion of the standard or land side B, in the usual way, by which the mold board may swing from one side of said standard to the other. At the upper end portion of the standard B is formed a sleeve a in which is journaled the support 17 of the jointer C. At the rear end portion of the sleeve is provided a rearwardly projected locking shoulder a, and on the rear end of the support 1) is mounteda hub d having a corresponding locking shoulder 6 to engage the shoulder c on the sleeve which are so arranged as to allow the support I) and the jointer to rotate apreviously determined distance, say one half a revolution, to turn the jointer to adapt it to the working position of the mold board. The hub 11 is provided with a downwardly projected arm it having therein an elongated aperture 1.
The handles D are secured to the standard B, as shown, between the plates E and F; to the plate F is pivotally secured the foot lever G, to which is secured a switch bar H, the front end of which enters the aperture 1', in the arm of hub d. On the ends of the lever G is provided and adjustable thereon, a hook Zr;
thereof, is beveled from the'centerw to the sides .2, forming radiating planes as shown in Fig. 2. The point 00 rests against the spring m. Neither end of the lever G in that case would engage the frame Z, but the moment the lever is, brought into action, the hook engaging the frame Z, the spring will be brought against the beveled end of the plate, and the point or; thrown to one side of the center of the spring, the tension of which on the end of the plate, will hold the hook in engagement with the frame Z, and thereby hold the mold board in working position.
In operation, the plow in use as a right hand plow, as shown in Fig. 1, has reached the point for turning, the plow man will place hisfoot on the left hand end of the lever G, press it forward to disengage the hook k, on the right hand end of lever from the frame Z, to allow the mold board to be turned to the left hand side of the beam B, and at the same time by means of the side pressure of the end of the switch bar in the aperture 1' in the arm h on hub d, the hub with the support b will be rotated to turn the jointer from right to left. The point of the jointer being eccentric to a line drawn longitudinally through the shank of the support the rearward and side pressure on the j ointer will hold the shoulder e against the shoulder c by which the hub and the jointer are held in operative position, corresponding with the position of the mold board.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with the standard B, and the mold board A pivotally secured thereto, of the frame portion Z, secured to said mold board, the foot le'ver G, having at its end portions adjustable hooks lo, the switch bar H, hub d, the spring mand the plateF acting in conjunction with the said hooks and jointer support I), when operated, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the standard B, and the mold board pivoted thereto, of the sleeve portion at, having a rearwardly projected looking shoulder c, a jointer support journaled in said sleeve, a hub d, mounted on said support, having a locking shoulder e, to engage the shoulder a, an arm h having therein an elongated aperture t', a switch bar I-I, foot lever G, whereby said jointer support maybe rocked in its journal in the standard, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the standard Band mold board pivoted thereto, of the supporting plate F, having at its rear portion planes diverging from a: to z, a foot lever G pivotally secured to said plate, a spring m to engage the aforesaid planes, to hold the foot lever in engagement with the frame Z, and a switch bar to rotate the jointer support, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the standard B the 20 plates E and Fas supports for the foot lever, G, handles D and beam B, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 28th day of January, A. D. 25 1893.
VILLIAM S. STONE. GEORGE WV. REAM.
