'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AUGUST ANSOHUTZ, ANTON SEIDEL, AND MICHAEL WEBER, OF LIVING- STON COUNTY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLowS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 144,308, dated November 4, 1873; application filed July 21,1873. f
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST ANscHUTz, ANTON SnrDEL, and MIGHAELWEBER, ofLivin gston county, Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following isa description, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings.
The invention relates to providing a plowframe with a horizontal foot, having its front portion properly inclined or concave, and its sides and front inclosed by a fender, to at ford the plow a' broad and sufficient support, as well as to assist in keeping'thefurrow open, and in guiding the device.:
Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper side of the foot F and fender R.
A in the accompanying drawings are the handles of a plow. Bis the plow-beam, se-
cured at its rear to the standard C, to the lower end and central portions of which the handles A are attached. lThe upper portion of the standard D is divided. the upper ex-V tremity of its rear arm secured to the under side of the beam B by `a bolt and nut, a, -while the other arm is secured in front of the ratchet E by a nut, b. The lower part of the standard D passes -through the foot F, coming' in contact with the shield,H on its upper surface. The rotating shaft I passes through the beam B, its' upper part journaled therein, and its extremity reduced to a shoulder, over which iits the square slot in the front end of the lever L, which extends .toward the rear of the device, its extremity being provided with a handle which stands in` convenient relation to the handles A. The lever L is supported by the arched ratchet E, properly provided with the, apertures d. The lower end of the shaft is journaled in the foot F, and its front surface is provided with the seat M, to which the concave plowshare N is secured in any suitable manner.
The foot F consists of 'a bar secured parallel to and below the beam B by the standards C and D. Its front is rounded, or somewhat pointed, and is thence curved or inclined upward and backward, the lower surface of the foot being covered by a shield of metal, H. The lower surface of the foot F is slightly below the lower front edge of the plowshare N. The fenderRis secured against the front of the foot F, and is bowed or'curved about the front portions, having a downward and outward inclination 5 thence the sides of the fender are vertical, and extend to the rear of the foot F, where its extremities are connected by the arched tie T, the sides of the fender being in line with the point of the plowshare, when operated as a right or left hand plow.
The device, being put in motion, moves smoothly upon the foot F, the fender B keeping the clods and loose earth from the sides of the foot F, and also bearing against the vertical sides of the furrow, thus assisting in guiding the plow.
When it is desired to use the Adevice as a left-hand plow the lever L is moved toward the right, whereby the plowshare N is rotated, and its right point thrown forward, thus giving the share a left-hand bearing. A reverse movement of the lever L converts the device into a right-hand plow. The width of the furrow is regulated by the distance the lever L is moved to the right or left or when a very broad furrow is desired the leveris placed parallel to the beam, thus giving the lower edge of the plowshare a full front bearing.
The operation of turning the plowshare, as above set forth, may be. effected readily while the plow is in motion.
It is obvious that the plowshare N can be placed `directly upon the shaft I, the front thereof being conformed to receive it.
We claimc `l. Thefoot F, provided with the fender R and shield H, for the uses and purposes specied.
2. The foot F, provided with the fender E and socket or jomnal F, in combination with the revolving standard I, lever L, and ratchet E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing improvement in plows, as above described, we have hereimto set our` hands and seals this 27th day of June, 1873.
