' r I 1 O J UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LLOYD M. KEAOH AND JOSEPH O. NELSON, OF TABLE GROVE, ILLINOIS.
STOVEPI PE-TH I M BLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,657, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed July 14, 1893. Serial ITO-480,522. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LLOYD M. KEAOH and JOSEPH O. NELSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Table Grove, in the county of Fulton, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue- Stops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in flue stops, having for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap adjustable stop applicable to fines or thimbles of different diameters, and which will-give double protection against the smoke and still provides a good bearing to fit within the flue or thimble so as to make a perfectly tight fit, and hold firmly so as to prevent its accidental displacement.
The device is composed of few parts and those readily and easily assembled and adj usted.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let! ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved flue stop. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same shown in position Within a flue shown also in section. Fig. 3 is sectional detail showing the manner of adj ustment of the body portion.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a sheet metal ring of suitable width, with its ends overlapped and one provided with a slot to extending in the general direction of the ring and to the other end there is fixed a stud or pin B which is passed through the slot of the other end and is screw-threaded as shown best in Fig. 3 and receives a thumb nut B, a washer I) being provided as shown, if found necessary. It will be readily seen how by means of this slot and thumb nut the diameter of the ring will bechanged; the material of which the ring is formed possesses suificient resiliency to make it practically a spring ring the spring of which aids materially in holding the ends distended. At one edge this ring is formed with a flange A extendin g at substantially a right angle thereto and this flange is slit at intervals as seen at a to allow the same to expand and contract as the diameter of the ring is changed.
0 is a face plate or disk of a diameter greater than the largest flue or thimble with which the stopper is to be used, and between this face plate or disk and the plate or disk D the flange A of the ring is held by means of a screw E which passes through a central hole in the two disks as seen best in Fig. 2 and receiving upon its inner end within the ring a thumb nut E as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This screw is preferably secured to a plate at carrying a handle or ring 6 by which the stopper may be manipulated, an additional plate or Washer F being employed if necessary or desired, as shown in Fig. 2.
The manner of use will be apparent; the thumb nut B is turned to loosen the overlapped ends of the ring, and the thumb nut E loosened, if necessary, to allow of the required movement of the ring and when the parts have been made to assume the required positions to give to the ring the required diameter the thumb nut or nuts should be tightened to hold the parts in such position.
The device is simple, yet durable and efficient and can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
What is claimed as new is- 1. A flue stopper provided with a ring portion with overlapping ends with slot and screw with thumb nut and a slit flange at right angles thereto, and plates between which said flange is clamped, as set forth.
2. The combination with the ring portion with a portion at its inner end extending inwardly and overlapping ends one of which is provided with a slot, of the screw on the other end passed through said slot and provided with a thumb nut, and the plates or disks with their clamping screw and'thumb'nut for holding the ring portion, as set forth.
3. The combination with the ring portion In testimony whereof We affixour signatures with its overlapping ends and slot and thumb in presence of two Witnesses. nut and screw and slit flange, of the disks LLOYD M. KEAOI-I. between which said flange 15 held, the screw N 5 passed through said disks, a handle on one JObEPH NELSON end of said screw and a thumb nut on the Witnesses: other end, substantially as shown and de- 'l. J. KINNEY, scribed.
