B. H. RODNEY. DOOR FASTBNER.
No. 506,196. Patented 001;. a, 1893.-
ilNrrEo STATES EUGENE H. ROONEY, OF
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DOOR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed January 3, 189
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE H. ROONEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and portable fastener for doors; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device with its parts in position for attachment to a door casing; Fig. 2, a section taken on line 22 of the preceding figure; Fig. 3, a plan view of the device partly in section and partly broken away, the attaching plate or blade, forming part of the same, being in the position preferred when said device is not in use; Fig. 4., a plan view of the device with the parts in position to prevent opening of a door; Fig. 5, a section on line 55 of the preceding figure, and Fig. 6, an elevation of a flanged plate or shell that constitutes part of the aforesaid device.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents aplate of any suitable contour, circular or otherwise, and this plate is provided with a flange 1), shown as having an inclined edge, said plate and its flange forming a device that is hereinafter sometimes designated by the term shell. The flange portion b of the shell is provided with two diametrically opposed recesses c, d, the first of the latter being in the widest portion of the flange, and the other in the narrowest portion of the same. The recess a is shallow and the other one dis of considerable depth,it being preferable to have it extend in as far as the plate-portion A,which latter may be beveled at its intersection with said recess 01 for the purpose hereinafter described. Gentrally located in each of the recesses is a guide-lug e for engagement with a longitudinal slot fin a plate B, one end of the latter being provided with a suitable spur g for engagement with a door-frame or a latchand-bolt-kceper mortised therein. The plate Patent No. 506,196, dated October 3, 1893.
3. Serial No. 457,042. (No model.)
B is bent at a suitable angle so as to extend on two parallel planes, thespur portion of said plate being on the lowest of these planes. As shown, the bevel portion h of the shell A conforms to the angular bend in the plate B, whereby the latter may be flush with said shell when the device is adjusted for attachment to a door-frame, this adjustment of these relative parts being best illustrated in Fig. 2. A
fin the plate B, and under compression between this plate and the head i of the pin is a helical-spring D of suitable strength.
It is preferable to have the pin 0 extend through a pillow block j of somewhat greater height than the adjacent guide-lug e for the slotted plate, in order that the latter may have a bearing for its inner end when one of the possible adj ustments of said plate or the shell, one upon the other, is effected. By means of the pillow-block or bearing for the inner end of the plate B, the latter is prevented from tilting and thereby cramping in the recess 01 of the shell A when said adjustments take place.
When the shell and plate are in the adjustment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the fastener is ready for attachment to a door frame, and this operation having been effected the door is closed and said shell operated to disengage its recess 01 from said plate, after which the aforesaid shell is rotated in either direction until its recess c-is engaged with the aforesaid plate. When the operation just described takes place it will be apparent that the shell will come in opposition to an adjacent door to act as a stop against the latter being open ed, the position of the parts in this adjustment being illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. By having the flange portion of the shell inclined, as above specified, a greater amount of surface is opposed to a closed door when my device is in the position and adj ustment just described, but it is not absolutely essential to have said flange portion of the shell on an inclined plane in order to accomplish the purpose of my invention.
When the fastener is not in use the shell and plate portions of the same may be so adinto the other and rest against the flange of pin 0 in the shell A extends through the slot justed as to have the spur-end of one drop the latter out of the Way, as shown in Fig. 3, the Width of said flange at this point being always equal to or greater than said spur-end of the plate.
In any of the adjustments above specified the plate-slotf engages one of the guide lugs e on the shell, and the plate itself being engaged with the recess relative to said lug a lock of the adjustable members of my device is effected.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in its preferred form, (the one herein shown) there are two essential members necessary to my device, one of these members being a flanged plate and the other a plate pivotally connected to the first and bent at an angle to extend on two parallel planes, or in other words one portion of the latter plate is offset from the remainder.
In order that the device may close up in comparatively small space and have the spurend of the attaching-plate out of the Way it is essential that said plate be provided with the longitudinal slot specified in connection therewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door-fastenercomprisinga pair of pivotally connected members one of which has an inclined door-opposing flange provided with diametrically opposed recesses of variable depth, the other memberbeing provided with a spur and off-set intermediate of its ends to thereby extend on two parallel planes, substantially as set forth.
2. A doonfastener comprising a plate having a flange provided with diametrically 0pposed recesses and a lug in each recess, an offset and longitudinally slotted spur-plate, and a pivot-pin on the flanged plate engaging the slot in the other, substantially as set forth.
3. A door-fastener comprising a plate having a flange provided with diametrically opposed recesses and a lug in each recess, an offset and longitudinally slotted spur-plate,a pivot-pin 011 the flanged plate engaging the slot in the spur-plate, and a helical-springintermediate of the pin-head and said spurplate, substantially as set forth.
at. A door-fastener comprising a plate having a flange provided with diametrically opposed recesses and a lug central in each recess, an offset and longitudinally slotted spurplate a pivot-pin on the flanged plate engaging the slot in the spnr-plate, a helical-spring intermediate of the pin-head and said spurplate, and a pillow-block adjacent to the pivotpin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
