Description

' UNITED kSTATES niet@ FFIGE@ THOMAS NEELEY AND CHARLES BISHOP, OF- TIFFIN, OHIO.
IMPROVED THILL-Tuc. l
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 60,655., dated October 24, 1865.
proved thill-tug. Fig. 2 is a sectional View,
showing the modeof applying the tug-strap to the metal eye. Fig. 3 is ansectioitliibrough the Yeye without the tug-strap. Fig. 4 is an external edge view of the eye.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in theseveral figures. l
The object of this invention is to strengthen and to render more Vdurable the tug-straps, which are used upon harness for supporting the thills of vehicles by combining metallic thimbles with leather tug-straps in such man# `ner that the thimbles shall receive the thills and protect those portions ofthe straps which surround the thills. from wear, as will be hereinafter described.
'To enable others skilled in the art to linderstand our invention, we will describe itscon-l struction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the leather' tug-strap, andB is'the metallic thimble through-which a thill passes.
l rllhis thinible or eye is formed of such shape` inside 'as will best adapt it vto receive the thiIP,
'and'on each side of its exterior surface is al tiange,.a, which angesreceive between them that portion of the lea-theritug-strap A,which eneircles theeye: as showt; in Figs. 1 and 2.
1n' making the` eye Batting, b, is formed on it, which tang hasv ahole through it to receive a rivet, c, that unites the two portions of the strap Atogether, and prevents the eye B from lany possibility of turning in the loop of the strap.
. At .the opposite end of theeye B a notch, e.'
is formed to receivethetongue-bar of a buckle, C, which is used to attach the tug to the harness. lhis buckle C is secured to the eye B in the act ofsecuring the strap A to it,so that the tongue-bar will be between that portion of the strap which passes around the eye B and the outer surface of this eye.
lu conjunction with the tang b and its rivet c another rivet at e is used for securing the loop of thestrap A; to the m'etai-lic eye;and
, if desirable stillanother rivctmay be used at i.
It will be seen that the ,two rivets e' and i will prevent the loop of the strap A from stretching when a strain comes upon the buckle C, and consequently they will prevent the tongue-bar ofthe buckle from slippingloutv of its notch in the eye B.-
If desirable, ajloop may belo'rined on that Vside of the tug-eye which cornes next the horse' for receiving a strap, which mayheused 4 for the purpose of holding' back, thus.y combining' the two features of holding upzthethills' and holding back .theauinial iu 'one device.
Having thus described'our invention, lwhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Applying a tugstrap toa metallic eye, B,
L by passinga portion of the strap around said eye, substantially as described.
2. A metal-lic'tugf-eye which is constructed with fauges a wand a tang, b, substantiallyy THOMAS NEELEY.V CHARLES; BISHOP.
as described. V.
