STEPHEN J. AUSTIN, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
PLATFORM-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 506,148, dated October 3, 1893. V
Application filed March 18, 1893. Serial No; 466,618. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN J. AUSTIN, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Platform-Scales, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speci fication.
My present invention is an improvement on my patents of February 26, 1878, No. 200,683, and October 25, 1887,No. 372,055, and relates to a universal swinging arrangement for the bearing blocks; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a side elevation, the nearest platform timber being omitted, a portion of an end of a bearing block being broken away, and a portion of the bearings being shown in vertical section. Fig. II is an end view and a vertical section through the platform timbers, and the base timber, taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a perspective view of the bearing block. Fig. IV is a perspective View of the universal bearing.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the base timber, on which is mounted the foundation block 2, from which block a post 3 extends to support the scales. In the upper end of the post 3 is formed a concave bearing surface 4, in which a knife edge 5, on a bar 6 has bearing. The bar 6 is connected at each end to parallel arms 7, which arms also connect the ends of the torsion pipe 8, (see Patent No. 372,055, referred to,) and also the bar 9 supporting a knife edge 10.
11 is the bearing block provided with a downward projecting bearing post 12, having a concave bearing surface 13, that bears upon the knife edge 10. The ends 11*.of the block 11 are enlarged, and forked, forming recesses 14, and provided with openings 15, at the bottoms of said recesses. In said openings 15 fit suspending bars 16, and on'the upper ends of said bars are arranged pivot blocks17 provided with knife edges 18, that have bearing in the bottoms of the recesses 14. On the upper end of the suspending bars 16 are knife edges 19, thathave bearing at 20 in the sides of said pivot blocks 17.
21 are the platform timbers, supported upon brackets 22, in the lower sides of which brackets are concave bearing surfaces 23, that bear upon knife edges 24: of pivot bars 25, resting in slots 26 of the bars 16. The lower side of the pivot bar has on its lower side, a concave bearing surface 27 resting on a knife edge'28, located in the bottom of the slot 26. It will be observed that a universal bearing is provided both at the upper and lower ends of the bar16, and therefore a universal movement is formed for both the bearing block and the scale platform timbers, thereby allowing free and easy movement of the scale parts in all directions, with but slight friction in any of the parts.
I claim as my invention 1. In a platform scale, the suspending bar 16, bearing-block 11, the platform timbers, the base timber, connection between the suspending bar and the bearing block, connection between the suspending bar and the platform timbers, and connection between the bearing-block and the base-timber; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a platform scale, of the bearing-block, suspending bar, pivot-block provided with a pivot edge resting on said bearing block, and pivot edges on said suspending bar resting on said pivot-block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a platform scale, of the bearing-block, suspending bar, pivot bar loosely seated in said suspending bar, and brackets connected to the platform timbers bearing on said pivot bar, substantially-as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a platform scale, of the bearing block, suspending bar, pivot-block '17, pivot edge 19 resting on said pivot-block,
and pivot bar 25 supporting the platform timbers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
STEPHEN J. AUSTIN. In presence of- ELM R- F. WILLIAMS, BASKIN E. RHOADS.
