.SCALE -PLATFORM SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,627, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed April 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SELLEoK,
a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Chiupon the side or end walls, or both, of the pit or well, and forming a surrounding stationary frame for the scales-platform, and to scales in which the bearings fulcrumed upon the inner knife-edges are pivoted to T-brackets supporting the platform, so that the weight of the platform and the T-brackets not only rests upon the pivot of said bearings, but said platform and brackets are not limited in their horizontal play except by the surrounding structure. As the surrounding structure referred to is necessarily but slightly removed from the scaleplatform,it will be understood that it, by reason of the concussion against the frame of heavy articles in placing them on the platform, or by frequent freezing and thawing of the ground or masonry supporting the frame, said frame should become twisted or slightly removed from its position relative to the plat form, the platform would consequently bind or be thrown out of plumb and the accuracy of the scale destroyed.
The objects of my invention are to overcome these objections by first suspending the scaleplatform independently of the surrounding structure in such amanner thatit will be firmly supported and its longitudinal play limited-by the suspending mechanism, so that its free movement and effectiveness will not be disturbed or destroyed by any slight variation of its supporting mechanism, as of the surround in g structure; second, to connectthe T-hrackets to their T-bearings in such a manner that the T-brackets will rest and move upon said bearings without destroying their free pivoted movement; and, finally, to have 'the T-bearings self-adjustable upon the knife-edges. I attain these objects by mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of that portion of a platform-scale which embodies my invention,

Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings, in which-- A A represent ordinary sills resting upon the bottom of the pit or well of the scales, and supporting goose-necks B, having broad bases to providemeans for rigidly securing the goosenecks to the sills by bolts, screws, or other suitable devices.
0 U are pipes or rods secured to L-levers D, the outer knife-edges, b, of which have their bearings in eyes in an ordinary yoke, D, suspended on hooks at the upperend of the goosenecks, said pipes being connected by arms F F to a stirrup on the end of a forked scale-rod, E, by means of slotted plates 0 e and set-screws e 0, whereby said arms may be adjusted so that their bearingon theyoke willbc equalized.
The L-shaped levers D are provided with an inner knife-edge, a, and with an outer knifeedge, 11, which are tapering, as shown in Fig. 4, so that whether the levers are cast about them or the knife-edges are driven into suitable recesses in the levers said knife-edges may be forced out to be replaced by new ones when worn out. The inner arms of these levers are also provided with flanges c 0 upon their sides, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,which serve to prevent the T-bearingsG from having a longitudinal or sliding movement along their respective knifeedges. The T-bearings G are rounded or convexed on their upper faces, gg, and their vertical arms are pivoted to the T-brackets H, which support the scale-platform. The under faces of the T-brackets are V-shaped, and rest upon the knife-edges'a, so that their ends are below the upper edges of the flanges c c, and by this means the bracket, while free to work upon the knife-edge, is prevented from having the longitudinal movement above referred to.
Y The lower end ofthe bracket-supports H are pivoted together, so that the rounded end of the bracket may rest and rock upon the convexed surface of the bearing, and thereby entirely relieve the pivot from any stiain, and at the same time permit said brackets to move upon each other without causing any sensible friction, as well as to cause the bearing to adjust itselt' upon the knife-edge.
It will now be seen that by suspending the platform from goose-necks secured to and supported on the bottom of the well the surrounding frame will not, unless very materially moved, destroy the Free movement of the platform; nor will the freezing or thawing ot' the ground destroy the effectiveness or accuracy, for the reason that the connections between the goose-neck and the platform will permit the scales to avoid any ordinary inaccuracy in the position of the beams.
By providing the inner arms of the L-levers with flanges rising upon their sides above the inner knife-edges the platform will not be en abled, when receiving heavy loads, to swing against and loosen the surrounding frame from its base support.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The scale-platform, the T-bracket, the T-bearings, and swinging lever provided with knife-edges a and b, in combination with the swinging rod, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In platform-scales, the combination of a goose-neck and yoke provided with eyes, and a swinging lever provided with knife-edges a and I), said knife-edges resting in the eyes of said yoke, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore described and set forth.
3. The combination, with a scale-platform, of a swing-lever provided with side flanges, and ot' a T-bracket pivoted to said platform and adapted to operate between these flanges, substantially as and for the purposedeseribed.
4. The combination, with the bracket H, supporting the platform, and with the knifeedge a, of a T-bracket resting upon the knifeedge and provided with a convex bearing-surface supporting the bracket H, and ope ating substantially as described.
5. The bracket G, in combination with the swinging l -shaped lever provided with the knife edge a and side flanges, c 0, rising above the bearing-face of the bracket G upon the knife-edges, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a scale-platform and with the bracket H, pivoted to the T- bracket and provided with a rounded end, of a T-bracket operating upon a knife-edge and provided with a convex face engaging with the bracket H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
