CLOSET-SEAT HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,023, dated October 3, 1893.

Application filed April 18,1893- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. WEBSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seat Hinges, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a portion of a seat secured by my improved hinge, the cover being detached but the parts of the hinge provided for it being shown. Fig. 2 is a view of the nature of a plan or elevation looking into the angle between the seat and cover when the latter is tilted up. (In both of these views the greater portion of the seat and cover is broken away, showing merely parts of each adjacent to the hinges for the purpose of condensing the figures.) Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the seat and cover. Fig. 4 is a detail of the portion of a hinge intended to secure the cover, and which, in its structure and relation to the remainder of the hinge, is a distinguishing feature of my invention.

A A are hinges of ordinary appearance, but slightly differing from the ordinary construction, as hereinafter explained, adapted to connect the seat'B to the slab C.

D D are wings adapted for connection with the hinges A A in a manner hereinafter described and intended to secure the cover E to the slab and seat. The pintles a of the hinges A are cut away or left short at the outer sides of the hinges, extending only half way through the outer eye A, and the remainder of the eye is vacant except as it is occupied by the pintle D projecting from the car 01 of the wing D. The members D D are made rights and lofts, so that they are adapted to be applied respectively to the hinges A A upon the outer side of each (although the use and function would be the same if they were applied upon the inward side of each), the hinges being reversed in position. The

usefulness of this structure is that when a seat is mounted without a cover, the hinges A having the ordinary appearance make a Serial No. 470,859. (No model.)

finished structure, being preferably applied upon the upper surface of the slab and seat and not let in flush with those parts, although they might be let in if preferred. If, at any time after mounting the seat, it should be desired to attach a cover, the same may be done to the preference as to wood or other ornamentation. The use of such a hinge is probably not limited to the particular instance of closet seats and covers, and I do not intend by thus describing the device to be limited to that particular application of it. Neither do I intend to be limited to the particular ex pedient by which the Wing is connected to the main hinge, although I consider this expedient, consisting in cutting away or shortening thepintle and providing a stud pintle on the wing, as the most economical and therefore desirable; but other expedients by which the wing is adapted to be pivoted in line with the pintle of the main hinge would be within the general scope of my invention, though I design to claim specifically the particular expedient shown.

I claim- 1. In combination with a two-wing hinge provided with an eye in its pivotal line, the third wing having a pintle adapted to enter said eye; whereby the third wing is attachable and removable at will without dislodging the main hinge: substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the seat and slab, the hinges by which they are connected, having each an eye in line with their pintles and at opposite sides, the two wings reciprocal in form and provided with pintles adapted to enter said eyes respectively, and the cover to which said wings are secured and whereby they are retained in engagement with the my hand, in the presence of two witnesses,
