UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
LEWIS D. FOWLER, OF NIXON, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF To H. H. HINKLE AND no. HINKLE, OF SAVANNAH, TENNESSEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,897, dated October 3, 189 3.
Application filed July 17; 1893. Serial No. 480,742. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, LEWIS D. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nixon, in the county of Hardin and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Hop, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in mops.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of mops, and to provide a simple and inexpensive one adapted to readily receive corn shucks, cloths and' the like, and capable of readily clamping andreleasing the same to permit them to be readily placed in the mop head and removed therefrom as desired.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings and pointed out in theolaims hereto appended.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a mop constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing one of the bearings. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the inner and outer frames.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
1 designatesan inner rectangular frame, constructed of metal, and consisting of opposite sides 2 and a front cross-piece 3 and provided at intervals with clamping bars 4. The frame 1 is provided at the inner ends of its sides, which are bent inward, with upward extendin g L-shaped arms 5, and the latter form continnations of, and are integral with a fork 6, which has a shank inserted in a handle'7. The sides 2 of the inner frame 1 are provided between the clamping bars with longitudinal slots 8, which receive reduced ends of clamping bars 9 of an outer frame 10, whereby the latter is slidingly mounted on the inner frame 1. The outer frame 10 is rectangular and consists of side bars 11 and a front end bar 12; the clamping bars of the inner and'outer frames co-operate and hold 'between them shucks or cloths and the front cross-pieces 3 and 12 of the inner and outer frames form clamping bars. The reduced ends of. the clamping-bars 9 extend through the slots .8 and are secured to the sides 11 of the outer frame'lO. The sliding frame is actuated to operate the clamping bars, by a rock-shaftl3 mounted in bearing eyes 14 of the L-shaped arms 5, and having depending arms 15, which are connected by. link bars 16 with the adjacent ends of the side bars 11 of the outer sliding frame 10. The rock-shaft is provided with a'central arm 17, which is curved at its front end to clear the fork 6, and which has its rear or outer end 18 bifurcated. The bifurcated end of the central arm 17 of the rockshaft is engaged by a locking screw 19, which is mounted on the handle 7 of the mop, and which is provided with a crank handle to enable it to be readily engaged with and disengaged from the central arm of the rock-shaft,
by turning .it. ahalf revolution. The mop.
head is braced and supported by a longitudinally disposed L-shaped rod 20 secured to the front cross-bar 3 of the inner stationary frame, 1
and extending rearward and inserted in the handle of the mop and welded or otherwise secured to the shank of the fork 6. Thel'arms 5, which are formed integral with the fork 6 may be integral with the inner frame'or be welded or otherwise secured thereto. The clamping bars at and 9 have their opposed faces flat and their outer faces are rounded, and their reduced ends form shoulders, which are arranged against the 'inner faces of the .vention.
What I claim is- 1. A mop having a head comprising a frame provided with clamping bars rigidly connected to it and arranged at intervals, and a sliding frame mounted on said frame and provided with clamping bars rigidly connected ICO to it and arranged in the intervals between the said clamping bars, and co-operating with the same substantially as described.
2. A mop head comprising an inner frame provided with a fork adapted to be attached to a handle, a series of clamping bars secured to said frame and arranged at intervals, an outer frame conforming to the configuration of the inner frame and slidingly mounted on the same and provided with clamping bars arranged at intervals and co-operating with those of the inner frame, and a rock-shaft connected with the outer frame and journaled thereon and provided at its end with arms connected with the sliding frame, substantially as described.
3. A mop comprising a handle, an inner frame secured thereto and provided with clamping bars arranged at intervals, an outer frame slidingly mounted on the inner frame and provided with clamping bars co-operat in g with those of the inner frame, a. rock's-heft jonrnaled on the inner frame and provided at its ends with depending armsand having intermediate of its ends a rearwardly extending arm, links connecting the arms at the ends of the rock-shat t with the sliding frame, and means for securing the intermediate arm of the rockshaft to the handle, substantially as described.
4. A mop comprising a handle, an inner rectangular frame connected with the handle and provided at its sides with longitudinal slots, clamping bars 4 secured to the sides of the inner frame and arranged at intervals, an outer rectangular frame conforming to the sides of the outer frame, said clamping bars 9 being arranged adjacent to and co-operan ing with the clamping bars 4, and means for locking the sliding outer frame against move r ing a fork and provided with clamping bars,
a handle secured to the fork, an outer frame slidingly mounted on the inner frame and provided with clamping bars, a rock-shaft journaled at the fork and having depending arms at its ends and provided with an intermediate rearwardly extending arm having its outer end bifurcated, links connecting the arms at the ends of the rock-shaft with the sliding frame, and a locking screw mounted on the mop handle and provided with a crank handle engaging the bifurcated end of the intermediate arm of the rock-shaft, substantially as described.
6. A mop comprising an inner rectangular frame having longitudinal slots at its sides I and provided at the rear ends thereof with upw'ardlyextending arms and having a. fork, a handle secured to the fork, an outer rectangular frame arranged on the inner frame and conforming to the configuration thereof and provided with clamping bars having reduced ends arranged in said slots and forming shoulders, a longitudinally disposed L- shaped bracing rodsecnred to the front of the inner frame and to the fork, a rock-shaft jonrnaled on thearms of the inner frame and 1 provided atits ends with depending arms and having an intermediate arm extending rearward along the handle and bifurcated at its outer end, link plates connecting the arms at a the ends of the rock-shaft with the sliding frameand a screw mounted on the handle of the mop and engaging the bifurcated end of the intermediate arm of themck-shaft and having a crank handle, substantially as deconfignration of the inner frame, clamping bars 9 having reduced ends arranged in the slots of the inner frame and secured to the scribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
